The COMMITMENT(:19-22)

Explanation: (:19-22)

:19—“And of every living thing of all flesh you shall bring two of every sort into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male & female.”

Besides Noah’s family, there were to be 2 of every kind of animal in the ark with him. These co-riders were to be taken from “every living thing of all flesh.”

It was Noah’s responsibility to see that these creatures would enter the ark—“you shall bring.”--cf. :20; 7:13-15.

While in the ark they were to remain “alive.” It would defeat God’s purpose if even one “of all flesh” were to go missing & thus bring death to that particular “kind” of animal(:20).

cf.--7:2-3—seven each of ‘clean’ animals & 7 each of birds.

The salvific nature of the ark is now clear & implied. Noah’s ark will be the means of preserving the living creatures of the original creation(1:20-28).

Of “every living thing of all flesh” included only those creatures which Noah?(See :20—“will come to you”) would have recognized as reproducing sexually, as both “male & female” are entrusted to Noah’s purpose.

These would be the “every living thing of all flesh” which would fall easy victim to the flood.

The animals were to remain alive along with Noah & his family. The animals required pairing because they were to be male & female. This was to ensure that they would propagate when the flood was over.

“Everything”2X(See :17—“Every...thing”)—lk kol—1) All, the whole. Strong—properly, The whole; hence, All, any or every (in the singular only, but often in a plural sense).

“Living thing”(See :17— “of Life”)—yx khah'-ee—Adj.—1) Living, alive. Noun Masc.—2) Relatives; 3) Life(abstract emphatic). N. f.—4) Living thing, animal; 5) Community. Strong—Alive; hence, Raw(flesh); Fresh(plant, water, year), Strong; also (as noun, especially in the feminine singular & masculine plural)--Life(or living thing), whether literally or figuratively.

“Keep alive”(See :20)—hyx khaw-yaw’—Hiphil Infinitive—1) To live, have life, remain alive, sustain life, live prosperously, live for ever, be quickened, be alive, be restored to life or health. Strong—a primitive root [compare hwx khaw-vah']; To live, whether literally or figuratively; causatively, to revive.

“Male”—rkz zaw-kawr’—1)properly--Remembered, i.e. A male(of man or animals, as being the most noteworthy sex).

“Female”—hbqn nek-ay-baw'—1) Female—1a) Woman, female child, 1b) Female animal.

:20—““Of the birds after their kind, of animals after their kind, & of every creeping thing of the earth after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive.””

Birds, animals, & creeping things were included in those male & female animals which would come to escape on the ark Noah would build.

God required that two of each “kind” would come to Noah. We do not know the particulars of Noah’s part in loading the ark.

The animals would “come to” Noah. Thus he would not have to search for & trap & collect. Noah’s calling was to provide a place for the animals when the flood came. This he did by faith. Noah’s faith freed God’s hand to employ His power to do what only He would do!

“Birds/Fowls”—Pwe `owph—Noun Masc.—1) Flying creatures, fowl, insects, birds. Strong—A bird(as covered with feathers, or rather as covering with wings), often collectively. Same as in 1:21.

“Kind”3X—Nym miyn—Noun Masc.—1) Kind, sometimes a species(usually of animals). Groups of living organisms belong in the same created "kind" if they have descended from the same ancestral gene pool. This does not preclude new species because this represents a partitioning of the original gene pool. Information is lost or conserved not gained. A new species could arise when a population is isolated & inbreeding occurs. By this definition a new species is not a new "kind" but a further partitioning of an existing "kind.” Strong—from an unused root meaning to portion out; A sort, i.e. Species. Same as in 1:21.

“Animals/Cattle”—hmhb be-hay-maw’—Noun Fem.—1) Beast, cattle, animal. Strong–from an unused root(probably meaning to be mute); properly--A dumb beast; especially any large quadruped or animal(often collective). Same as in 1:24.

“Creeping thing”—smr reh’-mes—Noun Masc. Collective—1) Creeping things, moving things, creeping organism. Strong—A reptile or any other rapidly moving animal. Same as in 1:24.

“Earth” (compare Ura :11, 12, :13 2X, :17 2X)—hmda ad-aw-maw’—Noun Fem.—1) Ground, land. Strong—from Mda; Soil(from its general redness).
