Summary: This is a sermon outline illustrating the Holy Spirit with a flashlight

What kind of help does a flashlight give us?

A flashlight can help us learn about the Holy Spirit.

John 14:23-26 I Corinthians 2:12

When Jesus went back to Heaven, God sent the Holy Spirit

From these verses what do we know about the Holy Spirit? (God will send, & helps us understand salvation)

3 ways a flashlight can help us understand the Holy Spirit

Light, power , on/off switch

Clue 1 Light: When we believe in Jesus as our Savior, He sends the Holy Spirit to help us find our way through life, just like the light of the flashlight help us find our way through the dark.

Clue 2 Power: Our flashlights get their power from the batteries. The Holy Spirit in us is like the batteries in the flashlight. They’re always there to give power to the flashlight, just like the Holy Spirit is always there to give us the power to do what God wants us to do.

Clue 3 On/Off switch: The on/off switch on the flashlight tells the flashlight to use the power of the batteries or not to use the power. IN our lives this is our will. We can decide to let the Holy Spirit to use His power to help us do things God’s way, or we can choose to do things our own way.

When we sin, is the power switch in our lives on or off?

Blindfold a volunteer

How did you feel when you were blindfolded?

What made moving around the room easier or harder for you?

Was it easy to hear the correct guiding voice?

How is this activity like listening to the Holy Spirit?

What voices in real life keep you from listening to the Holy Spirit?

How do you know if you’re listening to the Holy Spirit or not?

When we decide not to listen to the Holy Spirit we often choose our own selfish and wrong ways. We decide not to listen to God, but to listen to ideas telling us to do wrong. In order to do what is best, we have to listen to the Holy Spirit. The Bible gives us some examples of how we can tell if we’re listening to God or ignoring Him.

Galatians 5:19-26

Do any of these acts of sinful nature remind you of things you’ve done?
