Summary: Light is an essential part of life. It gives life, exposes faults, and can show us our path or even ourselves clearly. So what exactly did Jesus mean when He said that He is the “Light of the World.

Introduction:

So, who is Jesus? Let’s continue our journey to discover the answer to this question in Jesus’ own words. First, he told us that He was the Bread of Life? Today, we will see how Jesus now describes Himself as “The Light of the World.”

Light is an essential part of life. Without light, you cannot have life, food, or many other parts of life. Light has many different aspects to it. It gives life, exposes faults, and can show us our path or even ourselves clearly. So what exactly did Jesus mean when He said that He is the “Light of the World.

1. Light brings knowledge of our needs. (vs. 1-9)

A. Jesus illustrates this aspect in this encounter with the woman taken in the very act of adultery.

B. All eyes focused on the guilty woman.

1. It is usually easier to focus on someone else's sin rather than on our own.

2. Every person present that day had hidden sins (save Jesus).

C. The Pharisees were attempting to catch Jesus between law and grace….Isn’t that exactly what religion does?

1. He said He had come to fulfil the law

2. He was also friends with sinners.

3. The law demanded death for adultery

4. What would Jesus do?

D. Jesus stooped and wrote on the ground

1. The law had been written in stone by Moses.

2. Perhaps he wrote the Commandments in the sand.

3. If He did this, the law makes them and us face our sin.

E. The Pharisees now were made aware of their sins.

1. “Let Him…..cast the first stone.”

2. Exposed to the Light, they all departed.

2. Light brings hope to the hopeless (vs. 10)

A. She was guilty and knew she had no hope!

B. Now, she would have hope through forgiveness.

1. “Where are thine accusers?”

2. “Neither Do I condemn thee.”

A. All sin is ultimately against God. (Ps. 32:5)

B. Only God can truly forgive sin. (Is. 43:25

C. Light for all in the dark.

1. The dayspring from on high (Luke 1:78)

2. A Light to lighten the Gentiles (Luke 2:32)

3. The light was the life of men (John 1:4-6)

D. Our Lord’s passion for a lost World (Luke 19:10)

1. “World” appears 77x in John’s Gospel

2. Capsulized in John 3:16)

E. The adulteress deserved death but received life.

F. She deserved to be condemned but received a pardon.

3. Light brings direction to those who are delivered (11-12)

A. “Go, and sin no more.”

B. “Shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

C. These are directions for those who have been forgiven.

1. Salvation is only the beginning (Eph. 2:8-10)

2. We are not to walk in darkness anymore.

3. We are to walk in the newness of life. (Rom 6:4)

Conclusion:

The Sinless Saviour brings light and life to sinners. Today, He is inviting you to come out of darkness to the Light of the World. He will enable you to walk in His light!
