  Study Tools

I AM THE WAY

John 14:1-6

Introduction:

He is the life, both in grace (HERE) and glory (THERE), the life not only saves from death, but destroys it.

Christ is the WAY…

…by His DOCTRINE JOHN 6:68

…by His EXAMPLE I PETER 2:21

…by His SACRIFICE HEBREWS 9:8-9

…by His SPIRIT JOHN 16:13 (Albert Barnes NT commentary)

1.THE WAY OF ESCAPE

Escape form what?

Pain Sorrow and sickness James 5:15 I’ve been delivered

Evil II Tim 4:18 I’ve been delivered

Death II Cor 1:10 I’ve been delivered

Hell Gal 1:4 I’ve been delivered

If our temptations were such as none else had ever endured, and there were no way out of them, we might give up in despair; but it is not so. the Lord will not try us too much, too long, or too often. Grace will bear us through. (C. Spurgeons devotional commentary)

2. THE RIGHT WAY

II Peter 2:12-15, 10

Which have forsaken the right way. The straight path of honesty and integrity. Religion is often represented as a straight path, and to do wrong is to go out of that path in a crooked way.

(Albert Barnes NT Commentary)

A. Jesus is the Way out from sin’s penalty

B. Jesus is the Way out from sin’s power

C. Jesus is the Way out from sin*s presence

1. Satisfying enough to cover sin’s penalty

2. Strong enough to free sin’s power

3. Sufficient enough to deliver from sin’s presence

(A B C & 1 2 3 all from Jimmy Chapman’s message “The Way”)

3. THE ONLY WAY TO GOD

He was the leader in the road, the guide to the wandering, the teacher of the ignorant, and the example to all. (Albert Barnes NT commentary)

John 6:68 says…

Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

~He is the WAY!

Closing

A pioneer missionary in Africa tells how he was taking the gospel to a new tribe far to the north. With his guides he arrived at a village, a point beyond which they refused to go.

The missionary appealed to the local chief. Was there someone in his village who could act as his single guide to the distant northern tribe?

The chief summoned a man, tall, battle-scarred, carrying a large ax.

A bargain was made, and the next morning the missionary set off through the bush following his new guide. The way became increasingly rough, and the path had all but disappeared. There was an occasional mark blazed on a tree, occasionally a narrow path.

Finally, the missionary called a halt. He asked the guide if he was sure he knew the way.

The man pulled himself up to his full height. "White man," he said, "you see this ax in my hand? You see these scars on my body?

With this ax I blazed the trail to this tribal village to which we are now going. I came from there. These scars, I received when I made the way. You ask me if I know the way. Before I came, there was no way. I am the way."

The Lord Jesus Christ came from glory. Before he came there was no way.

If you know Him, you know the way.

(Closing story from Jimmy Chapman’s message “The Way”)

Jesus is not the new way or the old way, Jesus is the ONLY way!
