6 substantiations of an immersion in the affairs of God.

1— Immersion in God’s affairs is substantiated thru...

One’s Corporate WORSHIP(:41)

Explanation: (:41) Commitment

:41—“His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover.”

Jesus’ parents—Joseph & Mary—made a tradition/habit/custom of going to “Jerusalem” at least once every year to celebrate the “Passover” “Feast.” This was the outworking of their dedication to the Law. Seeing that the whole family went this time, gives insight as to their personal & individual commitments.

They traveled to Jerusalem because that is the location of the temple, where the actual sacrifices would be made. They would either take their living sacrificial animals or buy them from vendors in the city.

This Feast—along with that of Firstfruits, Weeks, Trumpets, Day of Atonement, & Tabernacles— was specified per the law of Moses(Lev. 23). Three of these were “main’ feasts—Passover, Weeks & Tabernacles in which the men were required to participate.

Ex. 23:14-17—““Three times you shall keep a feast to Me in the year: You shall keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread (you shall eat unleavened bread seven days, as I commanded you, at the time appointed in the month of Abib, for in it you came out of Egypt; none shall appear before Me empty); & the Feast of Harvest, the firstfruits of your labors which you have sown in the field; & the Feast of Ingathering at the end of the year, when you have gathered in the fruit of your labors from the field. Three times in the year all your males shall appear before the Lord GOD.”

“Passover” was a one-day celebration, immediately followed by the 7-day Feast of Unleavened Bread. Both of these feasts were celebrated together & considered “Passover.”

Passover was a celebration of the momentous release of the children of Israel from Egyptian bondage. This took place as YaHWeH literally Passed-Over the houses of the faithful(The lamb’s blood marking the lintel of each obedient family’s house), so that their first-born would remain alive. The first-born of every household of those who were not faithful to Him would die.

The events that take place in the following verses(:40-52) took place when Jesus was 12 yrs. old.

“It’s not an easy trip, 80 miles, three to four days, probably four days if children were in the entourage that went because they had to go from Nazareth & go around Samaria because of the attitude between the Jews & the Samaritans. So it’s an 80 mile trip & it takes three or four days if they can go 20 to 25 miles a day.”—John MacArthur

Why would the family make the trip to Jerusalem yearly? 1)Legal Obligation, 2)Social Interaction, 3)Love(for God, & family), 4)All three!

Argumentation:

Ps. 27:4 -6—“One thing I have desired of the LORD, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD, And to inquire in His temple. For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion; In the secret place of His tabernacle He shall hide me; He shall set me high upon a rock. And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me; Therefore I will offer sacrifices of joy in His tabernacle; I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the LORD.”

Josh. 23:11-13—““Therefore take careful heed to yourselves, that you love the LORD your God. Or else, if indeed you do go back, & cling to the remnant of these nations--these that remain among you--& make marriages with them, & go in to them & they to you, know for certain that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations from before you. But they shall be snares & traps to you, & scourges on your sides & thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land which the LORD your God has given you.”
