Every time Martin Luther would read the Scriptures he would ask the question: ...... "What does this mean?"

Over and over again, he would ask, "What does this mean?"

I pray that you too... ask that same question ...every time you read a portion of the Bible, ......or meditate on the truth of the Scriptures.

Let us ask that same question in light of Jesus' ascension, which we heard this day from the text in Acts.

So... What Does Jesus' Ascension ... Mean?

Well first and foremost ... It means that Jesus finished the work on earth ...... that the father gave him ... to do.

Remember our Lord's words from the Cross... "It is finished".

Forty days after Easter, ... Jesus led his disciples out to the Mt. of Olives.

For forty days ...... from Easter to Ascension, Jesus prepared the disciples ...... for the work that was laid before them.

Then that day on the Mount ...he blessed them ...... then he ascended into the heavens ... until a cloud hid him from their eyes.

Instead of being sad, ... Luke tells us in his gospel ......that the disciples were ......filled with joy.

What does this mean?

Perhaps we are stating the obvious, ... yet sometimes the obvious needs to be stated.

God sent his Son into the world.

He sent his only begotten son ....... to save the world from sin.

He sent Jesus here to rescue us...... for heaven.

The fact that Jesus ascended back into heaven to be with his father ... at his right hand ...means that Jesus ...... completed his work.

So ... What does that mean ... for you ... and for me?

Deep down inside our sinful natures ...... lurks the dark question the rich young ruler had for Jesus.

"Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?" (Luke 18:18)

We want desperately ... to be sure of heaven.

We seek something ... some good work ... to assure us ... of this salvation.

If only ... I had a stronger faith.

If only ... I would do better ... at living a Christian life.

Maybe ... if I read the Scriptures from cover to cover, ... I could feel more at peace.

Now reading the God's word from cover to cover is a good thing, ... but not if you are doing it ... because you think ... that will earn peace of mind ...that you will earn assurance ... of heaven.

Isn't there any good work that I can do ...to be more certain ... of heaven?

The answer is, "No."

Beloved... There is no work ... no work that you can do ... that will bring you ... that assurance.

Jesus has completed it all ... It is finished.

If there had been something left undone, ......... if there was something that had to happen ... to complete God's plan to save us, ......... Jesus would not have ... ascended into heaven.

He would not have ... left his disciples, ... looking up into the sky, ... if there was something ... if there was anything ... left to be done.

Everything was done.

Every sin was paid for.

And the righteousness of Christ ... has been transferred ... into the disciples ... account.

No wonder ... Jesus' ascension gave them such joy, ......and why it gives us such joy ... this day.

Relax ... experience his peace ... experience his joy.
