Summary: Let not your heart be troubled.

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions, if not I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.” John 14:1-6 NKJV

Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?”

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” NKJV

As Jesus was about to fulfill his destiny and purpose for which he came to the world, he tried to reassure his Disciples that he was going to his father in heaven, and they did not need to be afraid or troubled. He was going ahead of them to prepare a place for them. Thomas, one of his disciples asked him where he was going, and how they could get there too, since they did not know the way to the place. In response, Jesus told him plainly that he was the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one can get to God the father, except by Jesus.

So, what did Jesus mean when he said that he is the Way, the Truth and the Life? Let us examine these three concepts.

The Way.

Jesus is the only way to God. If you want to know God or experience him and his power, you can only do so through Jesus. Jesus is the only way to heaven. There is no other way to God. You cannot go through Angels or other beings. You cannot access God through small gods or other means. Please read my sermon titled “the Good Shepherd” on this, as it explains why Jesus is the gate through which we enter into the presence of God.

The Truth

Jesus is the source and fountain of truth. He is the very essence of truth. He is the righteousness of God. He is not a man that he can lie. He represents truth and justice. He also expects the truth to be told and revealed in all matters, especially those involving justice, liberty and freedom.

In administration of oaths in court, men promise to tell the “truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth”. Jesus is very interested in the administration of justice, as he hates injustice with perfect hatred.

Lady Justice is depicted as a blindfolded lady holding a pair of scales. She is blindfolded so that she cannot see the persons before her, so that she can be impartial and administer justice impartially. Thus we have legal maxims like these:

“Not only must justice be done, it must be seen to the done”.

“Justice delayed is Justice denied”.

So, acting to pervert justice or refusal to act amounts to injustice.

Jesus hates injustice with perfect hatred because it is against his very nature. He loves the truth, because he is truth. In any matter where the truth is being concealed, he ensures that the truth is revealed and told. There is a saying that “ a lie can travel for several years, but truth will catch up with it in one day “.

It is very hard to suppress the truth.

The Life

Jesus is life. He is the one that gives us life. He reveres life and he is the source of live. He has been given authority over life and death.

For those enjoying the fruits of injustice, let’s tell you a story about a fox.

There was a lean and hungry fox who hunted for food all day and found nothing to eat. One day, he found a small hole in the wall of a chicken house and squeezed himself through the hole. Once he got inside, he had a feast and the time of his life, as he ate chickens for breakfast, lunch and dinner. He began to get very fat and sleek , as life was so good.

One day, the farmer came into the chicken house and noticed that the number of chickens had reduced. So, the farmer spoke aloud and said that he was going on a journey, but when he returned in a week’s time, he was going to find out what animal was eating his chickens, and he was going to get rid of it.

When the fox heard this, he was greatly alarmed! He quickly went to the hole in the wall and wanted to get out as quickly as he could. Alas, he had grown so fat, he couldn’t squeeze through the hole!

The fox was trapped!
