- There was a famine in the land of Canaan

- Plenty in Egypt

- Water & Pasture for your flocks

- Come & settle

Genesis 47:4-6KJV

4 They said moreover unto Pharaoh, For to sojourn in the land are we come; for thy servants have no pasture for their flocks; for the famine is sore in the land of Canaan: now therefore, we pray thee, let thy servants dwell in the land of Goshen. 5 And Pharaoh spake unto Joseph, saying, Thy father and thy brethren are come unto thee: 6 The land of Egypt is before thee; in the best of the land make thy father and brethren to dwell; in the land of Goshen let them dwell: and if thou knowest any men of activity among them, then make them rulers over my cattle.

- The world attracts & bids us come

- It is proud self-assured with plenty of action & goods

Exodus 1:7KJV

7 And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.

❶ Sorrowful Setting

1. Friendless

Exodus 1:6KJV

6 And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.

- If we abide in the Egypt of this world we soon part with the fellowship of Jesus

- No longer in the company of His brethren

Exodus 2:15KJV

15 Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well.

- The arm of flesh failed them when Moses fled

2. Faithless

Exodus 5:21KJV

21 And they said unto them, The LORD look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savour to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us.

- Word given that they would b set free

- Only bitter unbelief

- Truth is freedom from slavery

Galatians 5:1KJV

1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

- Faith is needed — Do you believe?

3. Futileness

Exodus 6:9KJV

9 And Moses spake so unto the children of Israel: but they hearkened not unto Moses for anguish of spirit, and for cruel bondage.

- Life is futile without faith

- Without faith there is no true friend

- I’ve seen & heard the things you tried

I’ve seen & heard the things you want

I’ve seen & heard the things you have

❷ Spiteful Service

1. Serving an enemy

Exodus 1:11KJV

11 Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.

- One out for it’s own gain

- Seeking the destruction of their slaves

- As long as we are out of the kingdom of God we will be serving a enemy

2. Served With Severity

Exodus 5:5-14KJV

5 And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people of the land now are many, and ye make them rest from their burdens. 6 And Pharaoh commanded the same day the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying, 7 Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather straw for themselves. 8 And the tale of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish ought thereof: for they be idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God. 9 Let there more work be laid upon the men, that they may labour therein; and let them not regard vain words.

10 And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spake to the people, saying, Thus saith Pharaoh, I will not give you straw. 11 Go ye, get you straw where ye can find it: yet not ought of your work shall be diminished. 12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw. 13 And the taskmasters hasted them, saying, Fulfil your works, your daily tasks, as when there was straw. 14 And the officers of the children of Israel, which Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and to day, as heretofore?

- They were – Used — De-humanized — Beaten — Hated

- Egypt is Joyless — Thankless — Hard

3. Served In Misery

Exodus 1:11KJV

11 Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.
