Adam Clarke’s Commentary

He was his own governor, and what he did he said was right; and, by his cunning and strength, defended his conduct. When a man’s own will, passions, and caprice, are to be made the rule of law, society is in a most perilous and ruinous state. Civil government is of God; and without it the earth must soon be desolated.

a. Strength of army & loyalty of people

b. One weak or turn then his power was lost

2. Might be strong & have no need of God

a. Only by His great goodness not destroyed

b. Man thinks – going to live forever –

c. David > “only a step between me and death”

Ecclesiastes 8:8 There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.
