Love In Action

Luke 10:25-37

On June 17th a young man entered the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston South Carolina, sat down and attended the prayer service. After about an hour of meeting with these people 21 year old Dylan Roof pulled out a .45 caliber Pistol and shot 9 church members multiple times. The next day Roof was apprehended and arrested in Shelby North Carolina. Relatives of those who were killed told suspect Dylan Roof during an initial court appearance that they forgave him. These people forgave someone who took the lives of their mothers, fathers, siblings and children. This may seem like an impossible task, but it is possible with God! The natural response would be to seek revenge. But the members of that church illustrate how to show the love of Jesus in the most difficult of times. Those people do not just attend church, they show us how to BE THE CHURCH!

Being the church is not just following Jesus in “doctrine” or “belief”...It is following Him out into the streets, among the people, mingling with them and loving them where they are.In Matthew 22:37 Jesus said ...Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

Here in Luke Chapter 10, Jesus tells us how to love our neighbor. What Jesus describes in this discourse is "Love In Action". I would like to look at "the Parable of the Good Samaritan" and preach on that thought... "Love In Action

Luke 10:25 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? 26 He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? 27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. 28 And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live. 29 But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?

After Jesus described how we should treat our neighbor, a "teacher of the Law" asked Him "who is my neighbor?" Jesus responded with a parable that illustrates who are neighbors are. Lets walk through these verses and see what Jesus has to say about "Love In Action". Jesus begins by describing:

I. THE AGONY OUTSIDE THE CHURCH v30

- When you walk out those doors, you don't have to look very hard to see that:

A. PEOPLE ARE HURTING - That is exactly what the Good Samaritan found - v30 ...A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed,

As this man travels... an adversary attacks him, steals his possessions, stripped him of his clothes, wounded him and left him for dead. This man was in bad shape! We encounter people on a daily basis in similar situations!

a) There are people in our town who are homeless. - Can you imagine not having a place to lay your head at night. No refuge from the heat in the summer or the cold in the winter. Not knowing where your next meal is coming from.

b) Many People are addicted to alcohol. - They are consumed with the desire to take just one more drink. Their lives revolve around the bottle. And their choices have cost them their jobs, their health and their families.

c) Some are addicted to drugs. - Marijuana, prescription pills, Heroin, cocaine and crystal meth have ruined the lives of many people and they are hurting.

d) There are many women who are pregnant and they don't know how they will raise a child.

e) Many have been diagnosed with serious ...even terminal diseases. - Because of their sickness they cannot work. They have medical bills that they cannot pay. They have families that they cannot feed or clothe.

f) Some people are in abusive relationships and they don't know how to get out. - There are many other issues that people are facing as we speak. But some have an even greater problem... Worse than physical sickness, financial despair and chemical addiction is the fact that these people are lost and on their way to hell!!

- There is no doubt that people are hurting...Not only are People Hurting:

B. PEOPLE ARE HELPLESS - leaving him half dead. - This man was beaten to the point that he was almost dead. There was nothing he could do for himself. He was truly helpless! Just as we regularly encounter people who are hurting we also encounter some who are helpless. The Bible teaches that God uses us to help those who cannot help themselves!
