Summary: Thy kingdom come and thy will be done are saying basically the same thing. The will of God is to be King over us. We must realize God's will and the issues that block us from doing his will.

  Study Tools

1. Paternoster

A former soldier tells of being stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. When he had to go to the HQ, located in the Abrams Building, he had two options to go upstairs. He could take the stairs or the "Paternoster." This was an unusual elevator which had no doors, only an opening; and it never stopped. A person would have to hop on and off at just the right times. "Paternoster" is Latin for "Our Father." Our Father is another way that some people refer to the Lord's (Disciples') Prayer. He surmised that to ride that elevator required much prayer!

2. Matthew 6.9-10

3. Graduation Speech

I read about a disturbing graduation speech. The speaker was the valedictorian. He stood up to the podium and he thanked his father, which sounded good -- at first.

"My father taught me an important lesson," the young man said. "He told me throughout my entire life that I am the most important person in the world." Over and over through his speech, he talked about how true it was that he was the most important person in the world.

He looked out at his fellow students and told them, "Don't ever think that there is anyone more important than you. Do what you want to do, not what other people want. Your happiness is all that matters."

This is the destructive attitude in our society today -- ME, ME, ME! Criminal behavior; Political Corruption; Rudeness; Destruction of Marriages;

4. The Battle is this: Is it GOD or ME? The tendency is ME; the Necessity is God!

I. Recognizing the Will of God

A. A Reminder of the Place of God -- "King of the Universe"

1. Supernatural and All-Powerful Aspects -- Psalm 139.7-8

7 Whither shall I go from thy Spirit?

Or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

8 If I ascend to heaven, thou art there!

If I make my bed in Sheol, thou art there!

5 Who is like the LORD our God,

who is seated on high,

6 who looks far down

upon the heavens and the earth? Psalm 113.5-6

2. Unknown Concept to Pagans

a. A god for every occasion -- rain; fertility; lightning; sun; wind; fire; seas; hills; valleys

b. BenHadad -- 1 Kings 20.23-25

23 And the servants of the king of Syria said to him, "Their gods are gods of the hills, and so they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. 24 And do this: remove the kings, each from his post, and put commanders in their places; 25 and muster an army like the army that you have lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot; then we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they." And he hearkened to their voice, and did so.

1) Lost to Hebrews -- thought it was because their God was God of the hills

2) Solution: Fight in the Plain

B. A Reminder of the Plans of God

"If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans." He tells us his.

1. Reason to study scripture -- Psalm 40.8

I delight to do thy will, O my God; thy law is within my heart."

Teach me to do thy will, for thou art my God! Let thy good spirit lead me on a level path! Psalm 143.10

2. Purpose -- to DO, not just to KNOW -- James 1.22
