Summary: This message defines the word communion, and encourages the Christian to examine himself and make things right before the taking of Communion.

New Years Eve Communion

Hebrews 10.19-25

December 31, 2000

Communion can be defined in two ways:

1—A sharing, holding of things in common.

2—A close relationship with deep understanding—fellowship

1—Forsake not

How can you have communion with God when we don’t fellowship with one another?

We put everything before God! We can’t go to church because of work, school, we have company (well, invite them to come), a lot of times we don’t feel like it.

The devil will give us every excuse under the sun, but Romans 1.20 says that “we are without excuse.”

We need to be devoted to God—committed to Him and we need to commune with Him.

As I said, we put everything before God! What did God put before us? Absolutely nothing!

He gave up His own Son to regain fellowship with us—the relationship that was lost in Eden, is what God wants back.

2—Hate not. 1 John 4.11-13; 20-21 1 John 4:11-13 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. (12) No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. (13) Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.

1 John 4:20-21 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? (21) And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

We must not hate or hold a grudge against our fellow man. If we do this, how can we have communion with God?

You can’t harbor anger or animosity and love God at the same time.

Don’t have to condone the actions of the other person but you are commanded to love them.

Do you harbor anger today?

God will not commune or fellowship with those who harbor sin in their lives.

Psalms 5:5 The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.

Do you know why God forsook Jesus on the cross? Do you know why He could not look upon Him?

It is because Jesus became sin for us!

Habakkuk 1:13 Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity:

This morning, do you find yourself forsaking the church—forsaking fellowship with your fellow Christians and ultimately with God?

Are you not in church the way that you should be? You need to make it right before taking communion this morning.

Are you guilty of hating your fellow man?

Do you harbor anger? Do you treat others unkindly? Do you give dirty looks that are unwarranted?

You need to make it right this morning before taking communion.

New Years Eve and Communion Sunday—

It is time to make it right with yourself!

It is time to make it right with your fellow man!

It is time to make it right with God!

Here are five resolutions that I challenge you to make.

1—A deeper commitment

2—More prayer

3—Better attendance at Church

4—A better attitude

5—More love in your heart.
