Overcoming Anxiety with Faith

Introduction

Good morning, church family! I want to talk with you today about something we all struggle with from time to time, and that's trusting God in all circumstances. As we navigate through this often chaotic and uncertain world, we can sometimes lose sight of God's faithfulness and his steadfast love for us.

As A.W. Tozer once said, "Faith, as Paul saw it, was a living, flaming thing leading to surrender and obedience to the commandments of Christ."

Let's go ahead and take a look at our Scripture passage for today which is from Philippians 4:1-9.

"Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends! I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. Yes, and I ask you, my true companion, help these women since they have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are in the book of life.

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you."

Trusting in God's Faithfulness

Trusting in God's faithfulness is a concept that is deeply rooted in the scriptures and is a recurring theme throughout the Bible. The faithfulness of God is a rock-solid truth that we can cling to in the midst of life's storms. It is the assurance that God is who He says He is, and He will do what He says He will do. This trust is not based on our circumstances, feelings, or understanding, but on the character of God Himself - His unchanging nature, His love, His goodness, His mercy, and His sovereignty.

His unwavering commitment to us, His children: It's the assurance that He will never leave us nor forsake us, that He is always with us, guiding us, protecting us, and providing for us. This faithfulness is not dependent on our actions or behavior. Even when we are faithless, He remains faithful, because He cannot deny Himself (2 Timothy 2:13). This is a profound truth that brings comfort and hope in times of uncertainty and trials.

Believing in His promises: Throughout the scriptures, God has made numerous promises to His people, and He is faithful to fulfill every single one of them. From the promise of salvation through Jesus Christ to the promise of His presence and guidance through the Holy Spirit, God's promises are yes and amen in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20). Trusting in these promises is not always easy, especially when we are faced with challenges and difficulties, but it's in these moments that our faith is tested and strengthened.

Not a passive act: It requires active participation on our part. It involves surrendering our worries, fears, and doubts to Him, and choosing to believe in His goodness and love, even when we can't see the bigger picture. It's about letting go of our need to control and understand everything, and instead, resting in the knowledge that God is in control and His plans for us are good (Jeremiah 29:11).

Impacts how we live our lives: It influences our decisions, our relationships, and our perspective on life. When we trust in God's faithfulness, we live with hope, peace, and joy, regardless of our circumstances. We are able to face trials with courage, knowing that God is with us and He will see us through. We are able to love and forgive others, knowing that God's love for us is unconditional and His forgiveness is limitless. We are able to serve and give generously, knowing that God is our provider and He will supply all our needs.

A journey: It's a process that involves growing in our knowledge of God, experiencing His faithfulness in our lives, and choosing to trust Him more and more each day. It's a journey that is unique for each one of us, but it's a journey that we are all called to embark on as followers of Christ.
