In this story, we see ten virgins who are waiting for the bridegroom to arrive. They all have lamps, but only five of them have brought extra oil. The other five, the foolish ones, have not made adequate preparations. When the bridegroom is delayed, they all fall asleep. But at midnight, a cry goes out that the bridegroom is coming. The wise virgins are ready. Their lamps are full and they are prepared to meet him. But the foolish ones have run out of oil. They are not ready. They have to go and buy more oil, and while they are gone, the bridegroom arrives. The wise virgins go in with him to the wedding banquet, and the door is shut. When the foolish virgins return, it's too late. The door is shut and they are left outside.
This story is a powerful reminder of the importance of being spiritually prepared. It's a reminder that we need to be ready for the return of Jesus, our Bridegroom. We don't know when He will return, but we need to be ready. We need to have our spiritual lamps filled with the oil of faith and good works. We need to be living lives that are pleasing to God, lives that reflect His love and grace.
