Summary: Exposition of Psalm 3

Psalm 03

Context:

- Absolom, one of David’s sons, considered to be very handsome.

- Killed his half – brother (Amnon) who raped Absolom’s sister (Tamar).

- Exiled from Jerusalem and King David for 2 years for the murder of Amnon.

- Returned and there appeared to be a reunion; Absolom spent the next (4) years conspiring against David and wanted to turn all of Israel against him and take his father’s kingdom.

- When Absolom and his army revolted against David, David flees…

3:1 | Lord, how my foes increase! There are many who attack me. Many say about me, There is no help for him in God.”

• Many, Many, Many … David’s focus is those who are against him.

• David addresses the surmounting number of those who are against him / rising against him.

3:3 | But You, LORD, are a shield around me

• David takes his focus off his enemies and puts his focus on God. (This changes his outlook and mood).

• David reminded himself of the truth, that God was with him and could deliver him from even this situation.

• God protects us from all sides!

3:5-6 | I lie down and sleep; I wake again because the LORD sustains me. I will not be afraid of people…

• David’s trust in God is what gives him peace and the ability to rest (sleep).

• Lying down and sleeping are tangible ways to describe a state of security.

3:7 | Rise up Lord! Save me, my God. You strike all my enemies on the cheek (slap my enemies, NLT)

• This is a petition (cry) to God to rise up and scatter his/David’s enemies.

• This was a strike to bring about humility and submission.

• Rise – Rescue – Slap/Shatter – Victory – Blessing.
