Summary: "Why do the heathen rage?"

Psalm 2 "Why do the heathen rage?"

1. THE SINNER'S DELUSION

1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?

i. An Irrational Rage - Why do the heathen rage?

ii. A Universal Rage - 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, - All Nations, All Peoples, All Kings

iii. A Resolute Rage - 2 saying, 3 Let us break their bands asunder,

and cast away their cords from us.

iv. An Unreasonable Rage - 4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.

i. He Reigns - 4 He that sitteth in the heavens

ii. He Ridicules - shall laugh:

iii. He Rejects - the Lord shall have them in derision.

Acts 4:27 For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, 28 for to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done. 29 And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,

2. THE SOVEREIGN'S DERISION

A. He Laughs - 4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.

i. Their Hordes are Vain, ii. Their Hostilities are Vain,

iIi. Their Hopes are Vain, iv. Their Howls are Vain

Acts 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ

Psalm 115:2 Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their God? 3 But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.

B. He Legislates - 5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.

C. He Liberates - 6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.

"God's Anointed is appointed, and shall not be disappointed."

3. THE SON'S DEDICATION

i. To the Word of God - 7 I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

Not created, not adopted, but begotten. (Uniquely the Son of God)

ii. To the Will of God - 8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

iii. To the Work of God - 9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron;

thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

4. THE SPIRIT'S DIRECTION - (10-12)

a. Hear Him - 10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.

b. Fear Him - 11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

c. Revere Him - 12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little.

d. Stay Near Him - 12 Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.
