Explore the meaning behind Luke 17:32, emphasizing the importance of letting go of the past and aligning with God's plan for our future.

Introduction

Good morning, Church. It’s a blessing to stand before you today as we delve into the Word of God, specifically in the book of Luke, chapter 17, verse 32, where Jesus prophetically admonishes us to,

"Remember Lot's wife."

This three-word sentence speaks volumes and today, we will unpack what it means to remember Lot's wife, the consequences of not letting go, and God's better plan for our future.

As Charles Stanley once said, "We are either in the process of resisting God's truth or in the process of being shaped and molded by His truth."

Let's bow our heads in prayer as we prepare to dive into God's Word.

Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for the gift of Your Word that guides us and aligns our hearts with Your will. As we explore the meaning behind Luke 17:32, open our hearts and minds so we may fully understand the lesson You want us to learn. We pray for wisdom to not only understand but also to apply this teaching to our everyday lives. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Let’s get started!

Lot's Wife

The story of Lot's wife is found in Genesis 19, where God decided to destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah due to their wickedness. Lot, Abraham's nephew, lived in Sodom with his wife and two daughters. God, in His mercy, sent two angels to rescue Lot and his family before the destruction. They were instructed to flee and not look back. However, Lot's wife disobeyed and looked back, resulting in her transformation into a pillar of salt.

The understanding of disobedience: Lot's wife was given a clear command from the angels sent by God. Despite the explicit instruction, she chose to look back, demonstrating a disregard for God's command. Her disobedience led to her immediate punishment, reminding us of the severe consequences of defying God's instructions.

The symbolism of looking back: When Lot's wife looked back, it wasn't merely a physical act but a spiritual one. It symbolized her longing for what she was leaving behind - the sinful city of Sodom. This act of looking back revealed her heart's condition and her attachment to the world, rather than God. It serves as a stark reminder for us to not cling to our old, sinful ways but to wholeheartedly follow God.

The warning against complacency: Lot's wife might have become complacent living in Sodom, forgetting the gravity of sin. Her complacency might have led her to underestimate the seriousness of God's command. This story serves as a warning for us to not become complacent in our spiritual lives, to always be vigilant, and to take God's commands seriously.

The reminder of God's justice: While God is merciful and patient, He is also just. The punishment of Lot's wife underscores the reality of God's justice. It reminds us that while God's grace abounds, it should never be taken for granted or used as a license to sin.

A call to obedience and faith: It is a reminder to trust in God's plans, even when they don't align with ours. It's about surrendering our will to God's will, trusting that His plans are for our good, even when it means leaving behind what is familiar or comfortable.

It's a lesson that transcends time and is as relevant today as it was during the time of Lot.
