This sermon explores living a life of holiness out of adoration for Jesus, understanding our spiritual struggles, sacred mission, and the support we have in Christ.

Introduction

Good morning, dear friends and family in Christ. It warms my heart to see each one of you here today, eager to seek and savor the richness of God's Word. We are gathered here not as mere individuals, but as a community, bound by the love of our Savior and the fellowship of believers.

Today, we turn our hearts and minds to the precious verses of Mark 1:4-11. Allow me to read them for us: "John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And all the country of Judea was going out to him, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist, and his diet was locusts and wild honey. And he was preaching, and saying, 'After me One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to stoop down and untie the thong of His sandals. I baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.' In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him; and a voice came out of the heavens: 'You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.'"

In this passage, we see a vivid picture of the ministry of John the Baptist, the arrival of Jesus and the affirmation of His divine Sonship. But what does this mean for us today? How can we apply these truths in our daily walk with God?

Spiritual Struggle and Support

The great Christian theologian, J.I. Packer once said, "The life of true holiness is rooted in the soil of awed adoration." We are called to live a life of holiness, not out of obligation, but out of adoration for our Savior. We are not merely followers of a set of rules, but followers of a Person, the person of Jesus Christ.

Our main points today will revolve around the themes of Spiritual Struggle and Support, Sent on a Sacred Mission, and Surrounded by Seraphic Servants. As we unpack these themes, may our hearts be stirred to a deeper love and commitment to our Savior.

In the wilderness, we find John the Baptist, a man who knew spiritual struggle. He was not in a comfortable home, surrounded by the comforts of life. He was in the wilderness, a place of desolation and hardship. Yet, it was in this place of struggle that he found his support in God. He was not alone in his struggle. God was with him, guiding him, strengthening him, and using him to prepare the way for the coming of Jesus.

John's life was not an easy one. He wore clothes made of camel's hair and ate locusts and wild honey. His life was not filled with the luxuries of this world, but with the necessities of survival. Yet, he did not complain or seek a life of comfort. He was content with what he had, knowing that his true comfort and support came from God.

We may not be in a physical wilderness, but we may be in a spiritual one. We may be facing struggles and hardships, feeling alone and desolate. But we are not alone. God is with us, just as He was with John. He is our support in times of struggle. He strengthens us, guides us, and uses our struggles for His glory.

In the midst of our struggles, we may be tempted to seek comfort and support in the things of this world. We may be tempted to seek comfort in material possessions, in relationships, or in our own abilities. But these things are temporary and fleeting. They cannot provide the lasting comfort and support that we need.

God, on the other hand, is eternal. His love for us is unchanging. His support is unwavering. He is our rock and our fortress, our ever-present help in times of trouble. When we rely on Him, we find the strength to face our struggles and the courage to continue on.

Sent on a Sacred Mission

As we continue to reflect on the richness of Mark 1:4-11, we find ourselves drawn to the sacred mission that Jesus embarks upon ... View this full PRO sermon free with PRO
