The wind always blows around us. The mighty storm comes sooner or later. We have no choice or control over when the storm comes, so how do we keep our focus?

Introduction

Today, we will explore the beloved narrative of Peter walking on water found in Matthew 14:22-33. This story holds valuable lessons on the importance of maintaining focus in our lives. Just as in various aspects of our daily activities, focus plays a critical role in our faith. Without focus, our faith lacks trust and becomes scattered. However, Jesus encourages us to keep our faith's true focus, and the Holy Spirit helps us in this endeavor.

Background

After performing the miracle of feeding 5000 people with just five loaves and two fish, Jesus dismisses the crowd and retreats to pray alone. He instructs his disciples to go ahead to the other side of the Sea of Galilee while he joins them later. Little did they know that a storm awaited them on the sea, hindering their progress. Despite following Jesus' command, they found themselves struggling against the wind and waves, unable to reach their destination.

Lessons from the Storm

1. Storms are not meant to destroy us but to refine us.

2. We should not abandon our faith or church attendance during storms.

3. Generosity should continue even in the midst of trials.

4. We should not isolate ourselves from others during difficult times.

Jesus' Presence in the Storm

While the disciples battled the storm, Jesus saw their toiling from the mountainside where he had been praying. He did not abandon them but came to their aid, walking on the water towards them. Although initially terrified, mistaking him for a ghost, Jesus reassured them, saying, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."

Peter's Bold Request

Peter, always eager and adventurous, asked Jesus to command him to walk on water if it was truly him. Surprisingly, Jesus granted his request, saying, "Come." Peter stepped out of the boat, focusing on Jesus, and began walking on water towards him.

The Danger of Losing Focus

However, Peter's faith wavered when he noticed the strong wind around him. He shifted his focus from Jesus to the storm, causing him to doubt. As a result, he started sinking into the water.

Jesus' Saving Hand

In desperation, Peter cried out, "Lord, save me!" Immediately, Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. Jesus questioned Peter's doubt, reminding him of his little faith.

Lessons Learned

1. We often lose focus when we concentrate more on our problems than on Jesus.

2. Our faith should be centered on Jesus, not on ourselves or our circumstances.

3. Jesus is always there to save us when we cry out to him in faith.

4. We are forgiven for our moments of doubt and lack of trust in Jesus.

Conclusion

In conclusion, maintaining focus in our faith is crucial, especially during life's storms. Just as Peter lost focus and began sinking, we too can lose sight of Jesus when we focus on our problems or ourselves. However, Jesus is always ready to extend his saving hand when we call out to him. Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, trusting in his power and love to guide us through every storm we face.
