This sermon aims to explore the importance and benefits of tithing, emphasizing that all we have comes from God and we should honor Him by being cheerful givers.

Introduction

Good morning, church family! Today, we are going to dive into a topic that sometimes makes us squirm in our seats a little. But it's one that is very important to our faith and our relationship with God. It's all about giving - our generosity in response to God's generosity. Let's take a moment to look at 2 Corinthians 9:7, "Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."

Now, I know we've all heard that verse before. We've heard about tithing, about giving our first fruits to God. But have you ever really thought about why we do it? Today, we're going to explore not only the why but also the benefits of tithing.

God's Generosity

God's generosity is a fundamental aspect of His character that we see repeatedly throughout the Bible. From the creation of the world to the gift of His son, Jesus Christ, God's generosity is a constant theme. It's a generosity that is not based on our worthiness or our actions, but solely on His love for us.

In the beginning, God created the world and everything in it, including us, out of His love. He didn't need to create us, but He did. He gave us life, breath, and everything we need to survive and thrive. This is the first and most basic example of God's generosity. He gives us life and sustains us every day.

But God's generosity doesn't stop there. In the Old Testament, we see God providing for His people in miraculous ways. When the Israelites were wandering in the desert, God provided manna from heaven and water from a rock. He gave them victory over their enemies and led them to a land flowing with milk and honey. God didn't just give them what they needed to survive; He gave them more than they could ever need or want.

In the New Testament, we see the ultimate expression of God's generosity in the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ. John 3:16 tells us, "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." God gave us the most precious gift He could give, His own Son, to save us from our sins and bring us into a relationship with Him.

God's generosity extends beyond physical and material blessings. He also gives us spiritual blessings. He gives us His Holy Spirit to guide us, comfort us, and empower us. He gives us spiritual gifts to serve Him and build up the body of Christ. He gives us His Word to guide us and His promises to encourage us.

God's generosity is also seen in His grace and mercy. Despite our sinfulness and rebellion, God is generous in His forgiveness. He doesn't give us the punishment we deserve but instead offers us grace and mercy. He is patient with us, slow to anger, and abounding in love.

God's generosity is not just a characteristic of God; it's a part of His very nature. It's who He is. And because we are created in His image, we too are called to be generous. We are called to reflect God's generosity in our own lives, in our giving, and in our relationships with others.

God's generosity is not something we can earn or deserve. It's a gift, freely given out of His love for us. And it's a gift that we are called to share with others. As we have received, so we are to give.
