Explore the power of even a small amount of faith, the benefits of having great faith, and the dangers of unbelief.

Introduction

Good morning, church family.

Our message today rests on the solid foundation of Matthew 17:20, where Jesus tells his disciples,

"He replied, ‘Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.’"

This message is a beautiful reminder that even a little faith can move mountains. Today, we will explore the power of little faith, the benefits of great faith, and a warning about the dangers of unbelief.

As we delve into this topic, let's remember the words of D.L. Moody. He wrote, "A little faith will bring your soul to heaven, but a lot of faith will bring heaven to your soul." This quote is a perfect introduction to our sermon today.

Let us bow our heads in prayer.

Heavenly Father, we thank you for your Word that reminds us of the little faith that can move mountains. We ask that as we dissect your Word today, may we grow in faith, see the benefits of having great faith, and be watchful of unbelief. We ask this in Jesus' name, Amen.

Let’s get started!

The Power of Little Faith

The power of little faith is the idea that even the smallest amount of faith, as small as a mustard seed, can have incredible power. The mustard seed is one of the smallest seeds, yet when it is planted, it grows into a large tree. Similarly, even a small amount of faith can grow and produce extraordinary results. Faith does not have to be grand or dramatic to be effective. It just needs to be genuine and sincere.

The context of the scripture: Jesus used the mustard seed to illustrate the power of faith to his disciples. They had been unable to cast out a demon from a boy, and they asked Jesus why they had failed. Jesus told them that it was because of their lack of faith. He then went on to say that if they had faith as small as a mustard seed, they could move mountains. This was not a literal statement, but a metaphor to demonstrate the power of faith. It means that faith, even in small quantities, can overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

Evident in our everyday lives: We see it when a person with a debilitating illness fights against all odds and recovers. We see it when a single mother works multiple jobs to provide for her children and they grow up to be successful individuals. We see it when a small community comes together to rebuild after a devastating natural disaster. These are all examples of the power of little faith.

The size of the God in whom we have faith: Our faith, no matter how small, is powerful because it is placed in an all-powerful God. When we have faith in God, we are not relying on our own strength or abilities, but on God's. This is why even a little faith can move mountains.

A journey: It is not about reaching a certain level of faith and then stopping. Instead, it is about continually growing in our faith. Even if we start with faith as small as a mustard seed, we should not stay there. We should strive to grow our faith, just like a mustard seed grows into a large tree.

Pastor, here would be a good place to share a personal story about a time when you only had a small amount of faith and how it was enough. How did this affect you?
