Explore how our faith in Jesus Christ serves as the foundation, cornerstone, and building blocks of our spiritual lives, with God as the ultimate builder.

Introduction

Good morning, family of faith! Today, we're going to dig into a real gem from the book of Hebrews. Our topic? The foundation, cornerstone, and building blocks of faith in Christ. We'll explore how our faith in Jesus forms the bedrock of our spiritual life, undergirds all we do, and provides the bricks and mortar for our growth into Christlikeness.

The Scripture we'll be focusing on today is Hebrews 3:4:

"For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything."

It's a verse that reminds us that though we play a part in constructing our faith lives, it's God who truly does the heavy lifting.

Here's a quote I want to share with you from A.W. Tozer that sets the tone for our discussion: "Faith is the gaze of a soul upon a saving God."

Let's open up in prayer.

Heavenly Father, thank you for gathering us here today to explore Your word and to seek Your wisdom. Open our hearts and minds to understand how our faith in Christ forms the foundation, cornerstone, and building blocks of our spiritual lives. May we always remember that You are the master builder. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

So let's dive into building our faith, shall we?

The Foundation

The foundation of faith in Christ is the fundamental belief that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior, that He died for our sins, and that through Him, we have eternal life. This faith is not merely an intellectual assent to a set of doctrines or principles, but a personal, intimate relationship with Jesus Christ Himself. It is a living, dynamic faith that shapes our thoughts, attitudes, and actions, and permeates every aspect of our lives.

We can’t construct or earn by our own efforts: It is a gift of grace from God, who reveals Himself to us in Christ and draws us into a relationship with Him. As the Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 2:8-9, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast." This faith is not a human achievement, but a divine gift that we receive with humility and gratitude.

The basis for our understanding of God: Not only this but also ourselves and the world around us. It gives us a new perspective, a new worldview, that is centered on Christ and His redemptive work. It helps us to see the world not as a chaotic, meaningless place, but as a creation of a loving, sovereign God who has a plan and purpose for everything. It helps us to see ourselves not as autonomous individuals, but as beloved children of God who are created in His image and redeemed by His love.

A continuous process of growth and transformation: It is like a seed that is planted in our hearts, which grows and bears fruit as we nurture it with the Word of God, prayer, worship, and fellowship with other believers. It is a journey of discovery, where we learn more about Christ and His love for us, and become more like Him in our character and conduct.

A communal experience: It is shared with other believers, who are also part of the body of Christ. It is expressed and strengthened in the context of a community of faith, where we worship together, learn together, serve together, and support each other in our spiritual journey. It is a faith that connects us with others, transcends our differences, and unites us in the love of Christ.

An active, vibrant faith: It is a faith that compels us to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. It is a faith that motivates us to serve others, to share the good news of Christ, and to strive for justice and peace in the world. It is a faith that challenges us to grow, to change, to take risks, and to step out of our comfort zones.
