Who are the four friends of every believer?

Introduction

Today, we will explore a powerful story from the book of Mark, chapter 2, verses 1-12. In this passage, Jesus is in Capernaum, and word spreads quickly that He is at home. As a result, a large crowd gathers around Him, eager to hear His teachings. Amidst the crowd, four friends bring a paralyzed man to Jesus, demonstrating remarkable faith and determination. Let us delve into this story and uncover its profound lessons for our lives.

The House in Capernaum

Jesus was likely staying at Peter's house in Capernaum during this time. The house gradually filled up with people from various backgrounds, including Pharisees and teachers of the law who had come from different villages in Galilee, Judea, and even Jerusalem. The power of the Lord was present to heal, setting the stage for a remarkable encounter.

The Illness and the Paralyzed Man

In those days, there was no social security system to support those who were sick or disabled. People relied on charity for their needs. Moreover, illness was often associated with sin, leading to social stigma. In this case, the paralyzed man's condition not only caused physical pain but also added to his sense of isolation and helplessness.

The Healing

The four friends of the paralyzed man went to great lengths to bring him to Jesus. When they couldn't reach Him due to the crowd, they devised a plan. They climbed onto the roof, made an opening, and lowered their friend down on his mat. Witnessing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, "Son, your sins are forgiven." This statement puzzled some of the scribes present, as they questioned who but God could forgive sins. Sensing their thoughts, Jesus asked them why they doubted and posed a question: "Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up, take your mat and walk'?" To demonstrate His authority, Jesus then commanded the man to get up, take his mat, and go home. Immediately, the man stood up, picked up his mat, and walked out in front of everyone. The crowd was amazed and praised God, exclaiming that they had never seen anything like this before.

Our Four Friends

These four friends exhibited extraordinary compassion and sensitivity towards their paralyzed companion. They carried him, breaking through barriers to ensure he reached Jesus. Their actions demonstrated not only their love for their friend but also their unwavering faith in Jesus' ability to meet their friend's needs.

Application to Our Lives

Before we encountered Christ, we were like the paralyzed man, unable to approach God's throne. However, just as the four friends interceded for their companion, we have four friends who help us in our relationship with God.

1. Prayer:

Prayer is the foundation of our connection with God. We are called to present our needs before Him with thanksgiving. It is our duty as believers to pray without ceasing, bringing our concerns and desires before the Lord.

2. Praise and Worship:

We were created to worship and glorify God. Through praise and worship, we honor Him and express our gratitude for His goodness. It is essential to approach this act with joy and a willing heart.

3. Service:

By serving others, we honor our Heavenly Father. Jesus taught us that greatness comes through serving one another in love. As we selflessly serve our brothers and sisters, we reflect the character of Christ.

4. Study of God's Word:

As ambassadors of Christ, we must familiarize ourselves with His teachings. The Bible is God's inspired Word, providing us with guidance, correction, and instruction in righteousness. Through studying the Scriptures, we equip ourselves for every good work.

Conclusion

The story of the four friends and the paralyzed man teaches us valuable lessons about faith, compassion, and the power of Jesus to heal and forgive. Let us emulate the actions of these friends as we pray, praise, serve, and study God's Word. In doing so, we will experience a deeper connection with our Heavenly Father and witness His transformative work in our lives. May we be inspired to be true friends to those in need, bringing them closer to Jesus and His life-changing love.
