Scripture: "And Jesus answered him, 'Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.'" - Matthew 16:17-19 Quote: "Faith is never identical with piety." - Karl Barth ________________ Introduction Good morning family, friends, and fellow believers. Introduction

Good morning family, friends, and fellow believers. We gather today to embrace the powerful teaching found within the Gospel according to Matthew, chapter 16, verses 17 through 19. This passage draws us into the profound mysteries of faith, the cornerstone of the church, and the incredible strength that can resist even the darkest forces.

The Confession of Faith

The first aspect that stands out in this passage is the revelation. Jesus declares that Simon's understanding of His divine identity didn't come from human sources, but was revealed to him by God the Father. This underscores the spiritual nature of faith. It's not something we can attain through human reasoning or intellectual prowess. It's a divine gift, a spiritual insight that God imparts to those who seek Him. This revelation is the starting point of our faith journey. It's the moment when we realize who Jesus truly is and acknowledge Him as our Lord and Savior. It's a moment of divine encounter that transforms our lives and sets us on a new path.

The second aspect that stands out is the transformation. Upon Simon's confession of faith, Jesus gives him a new name, Peter, which means 'rock'. This name change signifies a transformation in Peter's identity and purpose. He's no longer just Simon, the fisherman, but Peter, the rock on which Jesus will build His church. This transformation is a testament to the transformative power of faith. When we confess our faith in Jesus we're undergoing a radical transformation that changes our identity, our purpose, and our destiny. We're no longer defined by our past, our failures, or our limitations. We're defined by our faith in Jesus and our mission to advance His kingdom.

The third aspect that stands out is the empowerment. Jesus doesn't just transform Peter, He empowers him. He gives him the keys to the kingdom of heaven and the authority to bind and loose. This empowerment is a testament to the authority that Jesus has entrusted to His church. As believers, we're not just passive recipients of God's grace. We're active participants in His divine mission. We've been given the authority to advance His kingdom, resist the forces of darkness, and bring about His will on earth as it is in heaven.

These aspects of the Confession of Faith are not just historical events, but ongoing realities in our Christian journey. Every day, God reveals Himself to us in new ways. Every day, He transforms us into the image of His Son. And every day, He empowers us to live out our faith with boldness and authority.
