Explores the vision of Heaven in Revelation, emphasizing its holy city, harmony and joy, and eternal rest, to inspire hope and faith.

Introduction

Welcome, my dear brothers and sisters in Christ. It's a joy to gather with you today, as we stand shoulder to shoulder in our shared faith, united in our love for the Lord and our desire to understand His Word. There's something quite profound about this gathering, isn't there? We are not merely a congregation, but rather a family, a body, intertwined and interconnected through the love of our Savior.

Today, we will be turning our hearts and minds toward the awe-inspiring vision of Heaven as revealed in the book of Revelation. It's a vision that can stir our spirits and ignite our hope, a vision that can anchor us in the stormy seas of life.

The great Christian author, J.I. Packer once wrote, "We never move on from the gospel; we move on in the gospel." This is the truth that we will hold close to our hearts as we contemplate the grandeur of Heaven, for the gospel is the very foundation of our hope for eternity.

Let's read together from the book of Revelation, chapter 4, verses 1-11:

Let's bow our heads in prayer:

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the privilege of gathering together to study Your Word. We ask that You open our hearts and minds to the truths You have for us today. May the vision of Heaven inspire us, strengthen us, and fill us with a renewed sense of hope. We ask this in the precious name of Jesus. Amen.

Today, we will be focusing on three main points: Heaven's Holy City, Heaven's Harmony and Joy, and Heaven's Haven of Eternal Rest. As we contemplate these truths, may we be encouraged by the promise of our future home, a place of perfect peace and joy, where we will dwell with our Savior forever.

Heaven's Holy City

In the book of Revelation, we find a vivid description of a city, not just any city, but a holy city. This city is unique, unlike any city we've ever known or visited. It's a city that shines with the glory of God, a city where the streets are made of gold and the gates are made of pearl. But what makes this city truly special is not its physical beauty, but its spiritual significance. This is the city where God Himself dwells, where His glory is fully revealed, and where His people will live with Him forever.

Its foundation: The foundation of a building is crucial. It's what gives the building stability and strength. In the same way, the foundation of this city is of utmost importance. It's described as having twelve foundations, each one named after one of the twelve apostles. This reminds us that the church, the people of God, is built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the cornerstone. This city, then, is a picture of the church in its ultimate, glorified state.

Its dimensions: The city is described as being a perfect cube, with its length, width, and height all being equal. This is significant because the only other place in Scripture where we find a perfect cube is the Holy of Holies in the temple, the place where God's presence dwelt in a special way. This tells us that the whole city is a Holy of Holies, a place where God's presence is fully and continually experienced. This is the ultimate fulfillment of God's promise to dwell with His people.

Its gates: The city has twelve gates, each one made of a single pearl. These gates are never shut, signifying that the city is always open, always welcoming. This is a picture of the inclusiveness of God's kingdom. All who trust in Christ, from every tribe, tongue, and nation, are welcomed into this city. The gates also remind us of Christ's words, "I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved."

Its light: The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. This is a picture of the fullness of God's revelation in Christ. In this city, there is no more darkness, no more confusion, no more uncertainty. Everything is illuminated by the light of God's glory in Christ.

The ultimate fulfillment of God's redemptive plan: It's a city where God's presence is fully experienced, where His people are perfectly united, where His grace is freely offered, and where His glory is fully revealed. This is the city that we, as believers, look forward to. This is our eternal home.
