7 parables called the “mysteries of the kingdom”

We will start a series of Sunday morning messages entitled “The Mysteries of the Kingdom”

“Mystery” in scripture is a previously hidden truth, now divinely revealed, but in which a supernatural element still remains despite the revelation.

Taken together they describe the result of the presence of the Gospel in the world during this present age and ends at the harvest time

Matthew 13:4-8

And he spoke many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; and when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up; some fell upon the stony places where they had not much earth and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth;

And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them; but other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundred fold, some sixty fold, and some thirty fold.

First the sower!

The time of seed sowing began with our Lord’s personal ministry.

Jesus was the first sower. (in the beginning was the word)

Marks a new beginning, prior to Jesus they labored in God’s vineyard (Isaiah 5) but now Christ himself goes forth into the world sowing the seed of the word of God to the earth.

Our task in this world to be sower’s of the seed

The Seed

The seed is the word of God.

Let’s spend some time on this one!

The Seed IS the WORD

Not some psycho babble

Not more laws or government

Not more regulation

Not better schools, or more education.

Not a live and let live attitude, or “let’s just all get along”

The problem in the world today is not the sin as much as it is the lack of seed being sown. We aren’t getting the word of God out to the lost.

The Seed IS the word, the word of God is what will change this world! Nothing else.

The Fields

Some fell by the wayside…Vs 4

Vs 19- when any one hears the word of the kingdom, and understands it not, then comes the wicked one and catches away that which was sown in his heart.

Some will hear the word of God and ignore it, or refuse to acknowledge it. They may think that by not acknowledging the truth of the word they won’t have to face judgment.

The Fields

Some fell on stony places… Vs 5-6

Vs 20- but he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and at once with joy recieveth it. Yet hath he not root in himself, but endures for a while; for when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, by and by he is offended.

Have you ever met the person who comes to church, walks the isle, gets offended (imagine that) and then you never see them again.

This is probably the biggest problem some other denominations have with security of the soul – but these were never truly planted.

The Fields

And some fell among thorns… Vs 7

Vs 22- he that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.

Some never get over the things of this world. I believe that God will provide everything we need in this world, in his time and in his way.

We cannot hold onto the things of the world and truly serve Him.

We cannot have two masters, you will serve one and hate the other.

Good Seed, Good Ground Good Fruit

But other fell into good ground... Vs 8

Vs 23- but he that received seed into the good round is he that heareth the word, and understands it; which also bears fruit, and brings forth, some a hundred fold, some sixty, some thirty.

He that HEARS and UNDERSTANDS

is there more to than the Christian life than this?

you must apply what you hear. Become a sower of the word of God, and bring forth good fruit.

You are a field and a sower

What kind of field are you?

Wayside, ignore the word and hope for the best

Stony places, ok to be Christian as long as it’s cool, but when things get tough or God wants to use you your out…

Thorny ground, afraid to trust in God and do what he has called you to do, are the things of the world (money, job, friends, family) stopping you from your full potential with Christ.
