The Seed

Genesis 3:14-15 (KJV)

And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: [15] And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

This message and those that follow it are born out of study that I have been doing in preparation for a book that I will be writing in the coming months. Abram is one of the most colorful personalities in the Bible. I have often been intrigued with God’s call on a common man for an uncommon purpose. As I began to study this “Father of the faithful” I found myself going back into the book of Genesis where it all began.

Genesis 3:14-15 (KJV)

I.

Notice that, the devil was doomed before the seed was ever born! The curse was pronounced by God long before there was a seed. Let me tell you today, that devil that has been fighting you had a bounty on him before you and I were born and he is defeated in Jesus name!

God said, I will defeat you through the birth of a baby! You think you hate to hear a babies cry; just imagine how it made the devil feel the first time the shriek of a newborn filled the sky! I wonder if that isn’t why he fights to kill the babies before they get a chance to cry. “Kill them in the womb, but don’t make me hear that sound!”

God had promised the Messiah was coming who would destroy the works of the devil and that He would be the seed of the woman. The tempter was to be crushed by one particular seed or descendent of the woman. This is a glorious promise: some descendent of the woman was to destroy the serpent. The serpent would strike the descendant’s heel and bruise him, but the descendent would strike the final and fatal blow. The descendent would crush the serpent’s head. This is definitely a promise of the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Note: this is the first promise of the Savior in the Bible, and the promise is unconditional: the Savior would come and He would destroy the serpent (tempter) in order to reconcile man with God. This is what is known as the Adamic covenant, God’s unconditional promise to Adam and man, the unconditional promise to send the Savior to deliver man..

Verse fifteen is also known as the Protevangelium, which means the very first declaration of the gospel.

1. The New Testament clearly tells us who the promised seed is. The seed may sometimes refer to the descendents of humanity or Israel, but the primary meaning of the promised seed is singular: it is Christ Jesus Himself.

“Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ” (Gal. 3:16).

2. The promised seed is said to be the seed of the woman, not of the man. This points toward the virgin birth—the incarnation—of Christ.

3. The devil—from this point on—would try to destroy the seed of the woman. But note: God never said which woman would bear the seed. Satan was always left guessing. In fact, Satan has tried from the very beginning to destroy the seed of the woman. He has been waging war against the Seed of God, the Savior of the world, ever since God promised to save the world.

There was the line of Abel, Adam’s Son- Satan led Cain to kill Abel, but God gave Adam another son, Seth (Genesis 4:1f).

There was the early line of the godly seed- Satan led the godly line to mix with the ungodly and led them into such vile wickedness that God had to destroy the earth. But God raised up Noah (Genesis 6:5f).

It’s interesting to note that part of the covenant that God made with Noah when he remembered Noah is that seed time and harvest would continue…Gen. 8:22

Don’t you know that sent the devil into a panic. I know that it is speaking primarily in relation to the soil but I also believe it relates to the entire picture of fertility.
