Summary: Because Jesus conquered sin, death, and the grave, He became the conquering King. As conquering King, Jesus does what conquering kings do.

The Victorious Resurrected King

(Isaiah 53:12)

1. An elderly pastor was searching his closet for a tie before church one Easter Sunday. Deep the back of the closet, he discovered an egg carton with 3 eggs and 100--$1.00 bills.

2. “This must have something to do with Easter,” he thought.

3. “Dear, why are these eggs here in the closet. Did you forget to dye them?

4. “No,” the wife confessed. “Every time during the span of our marriage, when you preached a really bad sermon, I put an egg in that box.”

5. The pastor concluded that 3 poor sermons in 30 years was certainly nothing to feel bad about, so he asked what about the $100.00 for.

She replied, “Each time I got a dozen eggs, I sold them to the neighbor for $1.00!

6. Sometimes we are so mesmerized by the wonder of the resurrection itself that we fail to appreciate its less-obvious implications. I am going to try to address that. Hopefully you won’t all be rushing for eggs afterwards!

Main Idea: Because Jesus conquered sin, death, and the grave, He became the conquering King. As conquering King, Jesus does what conquering kings do.

I. He Enjoys the Spoils of War: The Father Rewarded the Son With US (Isaiah 53:11-12).

A. The prophet predicted that the atoning servant would RISE from the dead (11).

NIV follows the Dead Sea Scrolls rendering, “After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities.”

B. The Son conquered, so the Father gave the MANY to Him (12).

“Therefore I will give Him the many as a portion, and He will receive the mighty as spoil, because He submitted Himself to death… “(Isaiah 53:12a, Holman)

“Assuredly, I will give him the many as his portion, He shall receive the multitude as His spoil.” (Isaiah 53:12a, New JSP)

1. The BBC ran an article about 10 adult women who, as adults, discovered they were on the autism spectrum. Many felt like they didn’t fit it; relieved to understand that their failure to pick up on social cues was not their fault — and that they were also exceptionally gifted in other areas.

2. Do you ever feel like you don’t fit in? Like you are not worth much? Maybe others do not consider you valuable, but God wants you very much!

3. In ancient times, during war, when one nation or city conquered another, they took valuables from that city, including human beings as slaves.

C. We were PURCHASED with His blood.

Acts 20:28, “ Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.”

I Corinthians 6:20, “…for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

D. Although we were purchased as slaves (servants), He relates to us as His FRIENDS and family.

• Pagans believed the gods fought one another; if allied with a certain god and your people were conquered, it meant that your god was weaker than their god…people were merely servants of these fickle deities; had no real dignity.

Slaves to a New Master: “But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code” (Romans 7:16).

Friends: John 15:15, “No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.”

Family: Hebrews 2:11-12, 17, “For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, saying, ‘I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.’

… Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.”

II. He Rewards His Loyal SUBJECTS with Gifts and Administers His Kingdom (Ephesians 4:7-8, 11-12)

But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it says, “When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.”

…And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
