Explore and understand the profound truth of John 14:6, which presents Jesus as the only way to God, the ultimate truth, and the giver of life.

Introduction

Good morning, church family! It's a blessing to be here with you all today, sharing in the Word of God.

We are going to dive into the Gospel of John, specifically John 14:6, which says,

"Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'"

This passage is a beautiful testament to the identity of Jesus and His absolute centrality in our lives.

A.W. Tozer wrote, “Jesus is not one of many ways to approach God, nor is He the best of several ways; He is the only way.” Tozer’s words remind us of the profound truth in John 14:6. Today, we're going to unpack this verse and explore three essential facets of Jesus: Jesus as the way, the truth, and the life.

Join me in prayer as we start.

Lord, we thank you for giving us your Word as a guide. As we explore the depth of John 14:6 today, we ask you to open our hearts and minds to fully understand the incredible truth it holds. Allow us to see Jesus as the only way, the ultimate truth, and the giver of life. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Now, let's dive in.

The Way of Jesus

When we consider Jesus as "The Way," we are acknowledging His role as the path to salvation and eternal life. He is not merely a guide or a signpost, but the actual road we must travel to reach our heavenly Father. This concept is both profound and transformative, as it shapes our understanding of who Jesus is and how we should respond to Him.

The original Greek: The word used for "way" is "hodos," which can mean a journey, a path, or a manner of living. It's a term that implies movement and progression, not static belief. Therefore, when Jesus declares Himself as "The Way," He is inviting us into a dynamic relationship with Him, one that involves ongoing growth and transformation.

A sense of exclusivity: Jesus does not present Himself as one of many possible paths to God but as the only path. This assertion may seem counter-cultural in our pluralistic society, where many voices advocate for a more inclusive approach to spirituality. However, the Bible is clear on this point: Jesus is the unique and singular way to the Father.

He is our model for how to live: In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus outlines the attitudes and behaviors that characterize His followers. He calls us to love our enemies, to forgive those who wrong us, to seek first the kingdom of God, and to live lives marked by humility, mercy, and peace. In doing so, Jesus provides us with a roadmap for our lives, showing us how to navigate the challenges and opportunities we encounter.

Implies a journey: This journey is not always easy or straightforward. It involves trials, tribulations, and moments of doubt. But it also involves moments of joy, fulfillment, and deep connection with God. As we walk this path, we are not alone. Jesus is with us every step of the way, guiding us, strengthening us, and comforting us.

He is the solution to our deepest needs and longings: We all have a God-shaped hole in our hearts that only Jesus can fill. We may try to fill this void with other things – success, relationships, possessions – but in the end, only Jesus can satisfy our deepest desires for love, purpose, and meaning.
