The Wind

JOHN 3:8 “The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

The word spirit in both Hebrew and Greek means “breath” or “wind.” Both a breath of air and a breeze are appropriate images for the Holy Spirit.

Jesus was talking about the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer.

1. THE WIND OF GOD

Wind is moving air, and this fresh air is needed continually for life itself. Even seeds often require wind for their dispersal and subsequent growth. Similarly, the Holy Spirit is the presence of God, the source for all life.

Acts 2:2 “And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.”

God compared His presence in our life to wind that we cannot see but nevertheless we can feel it. The wind of God’s Spirit is constantly blowing and we need the continual infilling, indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit

Wind has no material shape or form. It is invisible; we cannot see the source or the destination of wind. It is a mysterious, unseen force. Nevertheless, its presence is known by its effects.

Likewise, the unseen Holy Spirit can be experienced in a refreshing way. His presence is displayed in the work he does in human lives by transforming, sanctifying, encouraging, and teaching.

2. Wind Effects in our life

Erosion

The wind plays a big role in the transformation of the landscape. The constant blowing of the wind - picking up dirt, sand, rock and even trash over time will transform the appearance of the land - This is called “Wind Erosion”. Even in our best of efforts we are still a long way from where God wants us to be spiritually but He is constantly working on us, changing us, transforming us to become what He wants us to be

-Christ must be formed in us (Gal 4:19)

Energy

The wind is a powerful source of energy. Wind mills have been used for thousands of years to grind grain and pump water for irrigation. More recently wind mill farms have been built to generate electricity. For centuries the wind has been used in sailing to carry ships and boats across the seas

The "Wind of God" blowing in our life will empower us in our Christian walk and service

-Zechariah 4:6 ...Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.

Variety

There is great variety in the wind. It may be a soft whisper gently rustling the leaves on the trees, or it may be a hurricane uprooting trees. Likewise, the Holy Spirit may gently bring a person to Christ, such as a little child raised in a Christian home, or he may work in some climactic, dramatic way to bring conviction and conversion to the hardened sinner.

Renewal

It’s after the autumn winds that dry leaves fall of the trees and prepare them for a season on renewal. God will bring winds of change into our lives and even if sometimes we feel that God took something that we considered essential or precious as we submit to His will we will learn to trust in His wisdom and wait for renewal in our spiritual life.

3. Can you discern His wind?

Is the Wind of God blowing in your life and in your situations? Will you let the “Wind blow where it wills?”

1 Kings 19:11,12 “So He said, "Go forth and stand on the mountain before the LORD." And behold, the LORD was passing by! And a great and strong wind was rending the mountains and breaking in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was a fire. But the LORD wasn't in the fire. And after the fire there was a quiet, whispering voice.”

Sometimes God is not in the wind. Notice that God wanted the prophet to understand that there are signs of his presence in things we live and experiment but above all we need to listen to his quiet whispering voice that brings comfort, direction and sometimes correction into our lives.

Psychologists and psychiatrists have said that we all have a third ear that receives strong and quiet messages. And that is often how we hear God. God speaks to us in a still, small voice.

4. God’s wind blows were it pleases

JOHN 3:1-8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. The Holy Spirit is always up to something, but He is under no obligation to always tell you what that something is, unless (at that moment) you are under the anointing and being led by Him. Scream, yell, fast, have a fit (do whatever), and still the Holy Spirit will move where, when, on whom and in what measure that He decides - distributing to each one as He wills (1 Corinthians 12:11).
