Every believer can enhance their prayer life by incorporating the practice of fasting, thus multiplying their effectiveness in spiritual matters.

Introduction

In any building project, having the right tools and knowing how to use them is crucial for success. Just as a skilled builder brings a van full of tools to a construction site, believers have been given a powerful tool by God to enhance their prayer life: fasting. Unfortunately, many Christians neglect this tool and try to navigate through life on their own. In this sermon, we will explore the importance of fasting in prayer and how it can multiply our effectiveness in communicating with God.

Why should we fast?

1. Obedience to Jesus' teaching:

In Matthew 6:16-18, Jesus instructs his followers on various spiritual disciplines, including fasting. As believers, we are called to obey Jesus' teachings, and fasting is no exception. It is not a practice reserved for religious fanatics but is meant for all who follow Christ.

2. Demonstrating dependence on God:

Fasting is a tangible way to show our reliance on God. By denying ourselves food, we acknowledge that our spiritual needs are more important than physical nourishment. It is a discipline that trains our bodies to submit to the Spirit and seek God's strength rather than gratifying our fleshly desires.

3. Repentance from sin and intercession for others:

Fasting can be a powerful tool for repentance and intercession. In the story of Jonah, the people of Nineveh fasted and repented, leading God to relent from his judgment. Likewise, when we fast and pray for ourselves or others who need repentance, we demonstrate our seriousness and desire for God's mercy.

4. Seeking God's wisdom and direction:

In Acts 13:1-3, the early church fasted and prayed to seek God's guidance in appointing leaders. Fasting helps us focus our minds on seeking God's wisdom and direction. It is a way to discipline our bodies and align our spirits with God's will, enabling us to make decisions with spiritual insight.

5. Finding deliverance in times of crisis:

During times of crisis, fasting can be a powerful tool for seeking deliverance from God. In 2 Chronicles 20, King Jehoshaphat proclaimed a fast when faced with a vast army. Through fasting and prayer, he sought God's intervention and received divine guidance that led to victory.

Conclusion

Fasting is a tool given to us by God to enhance our prayer life and deepen our relationship with Him. It is not a magic formula to manipulate God but a discipline that aligns our hearts with His will. By fasting, we demonstrate our obedience to Jesus, our dependence on God, our repentance from sin, our desire for wisdom, and our trust in God's deliverance. Let us embrace fasting as a regular part of our Christian walk and experience the power it brings to our prayers.
