Visionary View: Look to the interests of others

Today, we delve into the words of Philippians 2:3-4, a powerful passage that calls us to "Look to the interests of others." In a world often driven by self-interest and individualism, the words of the Apostle Paul in this letter to the Philippians remind us of the higher calling we have as followers of Christ.

The Call to Humility and Selflessness

Philippians 2:3 (NLT) - "Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves."

Paul's message is clear: we are called to embrace humility and selflessness. It's not about self-promotion or seeking our interests at the expense of others. Instead, we are to consider others as better than ourselves. This isn't about denying our worth but acknowledging the intrinsic worth of every individual.

1 Peter 5:5 (NLT) reinforces this idea, "All of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for 'God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.'"

Looking Out for the Interests of Others

Philippians 2:4 (NLT) - "Don’t look out only for your interests, but take an interest in others, too."

Paul extends the challenge. It's not enough to avoid selfishness; we are to actively care for the concerns and needs of others. This is a mark of true Christian character.

Galatians 6:2 (NLT) reinforces this concept, "Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ."

In our busy lives, it's easy to become self-absorbed. Yet, to truly follow Christ, we must be intentional about looking out for the interests of those around us.

The Ultimate Example – Jesus Christ

If we ever wonder how this is possible, we need only look to our ultimate example: Jesus Christ.

Philippians 2:5-8 (NLT) - "You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross."

Here, we see the epitome of humility and selflessness. Jesus, who is God, willingly lowered Himself to serve humanity, even to the point of death. His example is a challenge and an inspiration.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, dear friends, as we embrace the words of Philippians 2:3-4, we are called to a life of humility, selflessness, and caring for others. It's not easy in a world that often promotes self-centeredness, but it's the path Christ calls us to walk. Let us remember the ultimate example, our Lord Jesus, and follow in His footsteps.

May God help us to embody the humility and selflessness exemplified by Christ. May we look to the interests of others and be a living testimony to God's love.
