December 20, 2009 Morning Service

Immanuel Baptist Church, Wagoner, OK

Rick Boyne

Message Point: It isn’t of matter of knowing who Jesus is; it is a matter of making Him Lord.

Focus Passage: Matthew 2:1-12

Introduction:

What do we know about these men? 1. How many were there? Most assume three (gifts) – but there may have been more. We don’t know.

2. Who were they? They were called “Magi” (our word magician). As such they were devoted to the study of the stars, but more than that, we don’t know.

3. Where were they from? Some have suggested Arabia – Babylon – Persia – We don’t know.

I. They Were Wise In Their Decision To Search For Jesus.

a. They didn’t have all the facts, but they knew that a king was born.

b. We have much more info than they did, but we are barely willing to go to church.

II. They Were Wise In The Way They Searched For Jesus

a. They Were Determined In Their Search. (traveled up to 1000 miles)

b. They Were Discerning In Their Search. (took Herod’s men’s direction)

III. They Were Wise In Their Devotion At The Conclusion Of their Search

a. it is not enough to discover who Christ is or even what he had done – we fall short if we only discover certain truths about him without also giving ourselves to him in faith and worship. It is not a matter of what we get out of worship, but what God gets out of worship.

b. What can WE give Jesus?

i. a) We Can Give Him Our Soul – John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

b) We Can Give Him Our Life – Romans 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.
