What Does It Mean That ‘all Died’ At The Cross? Series

Summary: A look at the idea of substitutionary atonement and what it means for who we are in Christ.
HOW MANY DIED AT THE CROSS? What does it mean that “all died” at the cross?
WHAT DOES "SUBSTITUTION ATONEMENT" LOOK LIKE? Christ died as a “substitution” for me.
[Put these in the outline. Maybe put some of the Scriptures on the screen.]
WHAT ARE THE PIECES OF THAT?
a. You sinned and that condemned you to spiritual death.
- Genesis 2:17; Ezekiel 18:20; Romans 6:23; Romans 8:6; James 1:15; James 5:20; Revelation 21:8.
b. Jesus died that death for you as your “substitute.”
- Isaiah 53:6, 11-12; John 1:29; John 6:51; John 11:50; Romans 5:6, 8, 10; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Galatians 3:13; Titus 2:14; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 Peter 3:18.
c. That means you died spiritually with Christ at the cross.
- Romans 6:5-10; Galatians 2:20; Colossians 2:20; 2 Timothy 2:11.
d. With the sinful you dead on the cross, a door was opened for you to be “born again” as a “new creation.”
- 2 Corinthians 5:17, 21; Galatians 6:15; Ephesians 2:15; Ephesians 4:24; Titus 2:14.
HOW DO I LIVE THAT OUT?
a. I live passionately for the One who died to give me new life.
b. I allow what Jesus did to “compel” me to invite and encourage others.
- The opening phrase refers back to the previous discussion, which concerns how Paul is giving his life in service of the Corinthians.
