1 Corinthians13:8

"Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away."

The answer to when the speaking in tongues ceased is taught in the Bible. Tongues were a warning sign to Israel of coming destruction.......Israel was destroyed and scattered in 70 A.D. The warning sign, tongues, must then cease!

Tongues, It’s Biblical Purpose Is Found

Who is Paul quoting in 1Corinhians 14:21? I do believe that Paul is quoting Isaiah, ch. 28:11 here in , 1Cor.14:21 "In the law it is written, "With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord." 1Cor. 14:22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe",

These verses are clear that tongues purpose was as a sign to THIS PEOPLE. We must ask ourselves who is....."THIS PEOPLE " and what kind of sign was it ?

The "law" was given to Israel.This people is ISRAEL. NOT THE CHURCH OR GENTILES! The Church is not mentioned anywhere in the Old testament.It was a secret revealed through New Testament Teachings. See Eph 3:9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: Eph. 5:32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

The 14 th chapter of Corinthinians teaches clearly that tongues was a sign to unbelieving ISRAEL. 1Cor:14:22: Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

What kind of sign was tongues?

If we look "in the law",Isaiah 28:11 we see that tongues was a sign of soon coming judgement upon ISRAEL.Read below and see for yourself.

You see,the Apostle Paul when he said "in the law" ,is QUOTING.......... Isa:28:11" For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.12: To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear. 13: But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken. 14: Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem. 15: Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves: 16: Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste. 17: *Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place. 18: And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it. 19: From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report. 20: For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it: and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it. 21: For the LORD shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act.

Tongues Was A Warning Sign OF JUDGMENT

1Cor. 14:22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe",

Tongues was a warning sign of judgment to come ( TO UNBELIEVING ISRAEL not to the Gentiles), that Isaiah said would precede an oncoming Judgment...

Even Jesus spoke of a judgment shortly to come ...... Matthew 21: 40 "When the lord therefore of the vineyard (obviously Israel) cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen? 41 They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons. 42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? 43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. 44 And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. 45 And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them. 46 But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet."
