Summary: What is the position that this salvation puts me in?

WHERE DOES THIS SALVATION PLACE ME? I have peace with God.

- Romans 5:1-2.

- Pieces of this passage:

a. We talked in the last sermon about being justified by faith.

- v. 1a.

b. Where that salvation places me is that I now have peace with God.

- v. 1b.

c. Jesus made that happen.

- v. 1c.

d. My part was that I had faith.

- v. 2a.

e. All this leaves me rejoicing in the hope I have on the ever-increasing glory of God.

- v. 2b.

DOES THAT MEAN EVERYTHING WILL BE EASY? Even the struggles lead us to increased hope.

- Romans 5:3-5a.

- Pieces of this passage:

a. Even the struggles lead to more hope.

- vv. 3-4.

b. Hope (the anticipation of good things we have not yet received) is solid for us.

- v. 5a.

WHY IS OUT HOPE ON SOLID GROUND? All of this was of God’s initiative, revealing how much He loves us.

- Romans 5:5b-11.

- Pieces of this passage:

a. God’s love is poured out to us by the Holy Spirit.

- v. 5b.

b. While we were still vile, God had Jesus die for us.

- vv. 6-8.

c. And God didn’t just undo the negative, He gave us the positive.

- vv. 9-11.

WHERE DOES THIS SALVATION PLACE THE COSMOS? Jesus has undone the curse.

- Romans 5:12-19.

- Pieces of this passage:

a. Sin and death entered the world through one man.

- vv. 12-14.

b. The curse filtered down through one man; redemption filtered up through one man.

- vv. 15-19.

- This is one explanation of how we can get credit for what Jesus did: it filters to us from one man the same way sin did.

BUT MY SIN IS GREAT: Even when I am fully aware of my sinfulness, grace is greater.

- Romans 5:20-21.

a. Even when we see greater sinfulness – or to put it the way I’m putting it, when I am more aware of how great my sinfulness is – grace is greater.

- vv. 20-21.

b. Following a similar point that I made a moment ago, when Paul writes that “just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness,” we get a picture of how expansive what Christ is doing is.

- v. 21.

- When you think of death as it is in our world, you think of something that is an unquestioned fact. It’s wild to think of grace and righteousness being that way in the future.
