More Non-Christians: Over the past 10 years, the number of adults who identify with a non-Christian religion rose from 5.8 million to 7.7 million, according to a Graduate Center of the City University of New York report. This represents an increase from 3.3% to 3.7% of the population.

The American Religious Identification Survey also found that the proportion of the population that can be classified as Christian has declined from 86% in ‘90 to 77% now. The largest increase has been among those adults who do not subscribe to any religious identification. Their number has more than doubled from 14.3 million in ‘90 to 29.4 million in ‘01, while their proportion of the population has grown from just 8% in ‘90 to over 14% in ‘01. (PWB 11/1/01)
