1.- Cherish your time with them.

When we adopted our first child, we decided that it was outright important for the child to have a mom and a dad that were there for them. My wife quit her job and became a stay at home mother. She is amazing! And I also had to find a job that would allow me some time with the family. I wasn’t going to adopt children and not spend time with them or be the father God called me to be. I was working as a General Manager at Cracker Barrel making six figures. The money was great but the lifestyle was tough. Working 60-70 hours a week. No holidays off. Sunday is the busiest day of the week at Cracker Barrel so I almost never had a Sunday off. I did not want to be that dad that one day found out that his son was graduating from high school and wondered what happened? My children needed a dad and I needed to be there for my children. For their soccer games, violin recitals, their birthdays and for major holidays. So I left Cracker Barrel and took a job with Bush’s Chicken as an area manager. I make about half of what I used to make and my wife is not working a paying job so you can just imagine how difficult it is to make ends meet! But the time I am able to spend with my family is of greater value! Being there to watch Eddie score 6 amazing goals in one soccer game is priceless. Being there to put my three boys to bed every night is wonderful and will be a memory that the boys will treasure for the rest of their lives.

Not everyone can do what we have done, but if you can make the adjustments, do it! If not, then cherish the time you are with them because one thing is for sure, time doesn’t stop for anyone and the One thing that will amaze you is how quickly the years will fly. My oldest son is almost 8, which means I have 10 short years with him before he leaves the nest. That’s not enough time! The time you have with them is short and precious — make the most of it. Spend as much time as you can with them, and make it quality, loving time. Try to be present as much as possible while you’re with them too — don’t let your mind drift away, as they can sense that.
