Just Announced: Philippians Sermon Series

Summary: The need to be baptized in the Holy Ghost

A. There are many things you can be filled with.

Genesis 6:11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled

with violence.

Exodus 16:12 I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel: speak unto them, saying, At even ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled with bread; and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God.

Exodus 28:3 And thou shalt speak unto all that are wise hearted, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron’s garments to consecrate him, that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office.

Proverbs 1:31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled

with their own devices.

Proverbs 12:21 There shall no evil happen to the just: but the wicked shall be filled

with mischief.

Proverbs 30:22 For a servant when he reigneth; and a fool when he is filled with

Isaiah 21:3 Therefore are my loins filled with pain: pangs have taken hold upon me,

as the pangs of a woman that travaileth: I was bowed down at the hearing of

it; I was dismayed at the seeing of it.

Jeremiah 51:5 For Israel hath not been forsaken, nor Judah of his God, of the LORD of hosts; though their land was filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel.

Ezekiel 23:33 Thou shalt be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, with the cup of

astonishment and desolation, with the cup of thy sister Samaria.

Luke 4:28 And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were

filled with wrath,

Luke 5:26 And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled

with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.

Luke 6:11 And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.

Acts 13:45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy,

and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming.

B. People who were filled with the Holy Ghost

Luke 1:15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.

It is God’s prerogative to make “great.” When he does it, the man is very humble, but when man attempts it, he is very conceited. Dake.

Luke 1:41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

Luke 1:67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and

prophesied, saying,

Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 4:8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of

the people, and elders of Israel,

Acts 4:31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.

Acts 9:17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting

his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. [Before water baptism.]

Acts 10:44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them

which heard the word. [Before water baptism.]

Tongues followed filling by Holy Ghost.

Acts 10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then

answered Peter,

Acts 13:52 And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

Ephesians 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled

with the Spirit;

This is the privilege of every Christian. It is true that every born-again man receives the Spirit of sonship and has the Holy Spirit in a measure (Romans 8:9, 14-16), but this is not the kind of filling one may yet receive if he will accept truth and seek God for the fullness of the Spirit. Finis Dake

Scriptures that refer to an amount of the Spirit:

John 3:34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God

giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

Jesus was not limited.

II Kings 2:9 And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
