“It takes Guts” 1 Samuel 16:1-13

1. What is Guts?

• Guts are the digestive tract the intestine or stomach

• Guts are the inner essential parts. Like the guts of a car

• Guts is fortitude and stamina in coping with what alarms, or discourages :

• Instinctual part of a person She knew in her gut that he was lying. one's inmost self : a gut

2. Look at some Folks with Guts

• It took Guts for Witold Pilecki, a Polish soldier, in 1940, volunteered to join a German roundup to report what was going on inside a new concentration camp called Auschwitz.

• It took guts for Jeremiah Denton, A prisoner-of-war in Vietnam, who signaled the abuse of POWs by blinking, a propaganda video, the message T-O-R-T-U-R-E in Morse code.

• It took Guts for Harriet Tubman, who escaped slavery by way of the Underground Railroad and then risked re-enslavement and death. She returned to the South on at least 19 trips to guide as many as 300 enslaved Americans to freedom.

• It takes Guts today to be employee in the medical field Janitor, kitchen, nurses, doctor

• It takes guts for Samuel to anoint a new king while there’s an active king on the throne

3. It takes Guts to follow Gods Plan or it takes a leap of faith

• God Speaks the Lord says to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel” (v. 1). God instructs fill the horn with oil and go to Bethlehem see Jesse

• God tells Samuel that he has chosen a new king from among the sons of Jesse.

• Samuel fears he asks, “How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will kill me.” (v. 2). Samuel knows that King Saul is powerful and ruthless. He will not hesitate to “remove” those who oppose him.

• God s got a plan we must trust God. The Lord says, “Take a heifer with you, and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for me the one whom I name to you” (vv. 2-3). Then Samuel, believing that God is with him, takes a leap of faith and hits the road for Bethlehem.

4. Times when you have to take a leap of Faith and trust that God is with you?

• Perhaps you’ve been the new kid in school, walking into homeroom for the first time and sensing everyone’s eyes are you

• Or a police officer going out on a night patrol. First responder on a call

• Or a member of the military on deployment in a war zone.

• Maybe you’ve been a friend who is challenged to speak the truth in love, and to hold another friend accountable. All require leaps of faith, trusting that God is with you.

5. Life’s issues forces us to have guts in those times remember God provides Away

• God provides a way. God does not simply say to Samuel, “Go anoint a new king. Lotsa luck.” No, the Lord gives Samuel a path to walk, one that will not arouse the suspicions of King Saul.

• When we face challenging situations, the Lord will be with us, too.

• God will Provide Away through Coronavirus Covid-19 God gives guidance for the new student. Employees, marriage partners, police officers, soldiers and friends.

• It going to take Guts like Pilecki to go inside the concentration camp. Its going to take guts to reach inside during these times to trust God

• Its going to take guts like Denton to proclaim a message of reality this is what’s going on the Reality virus is here let’s do what the professional ask of us

• Its going to take guts to take that leap of faith we need to have peace and not panic have faith and not fear. Girl in Italy quarantined her and family

• It take guts to trust God Samuel did. Samuel anoints David as king in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the Lord comes mightily upon David “from that day forward” (v. 13).

• Remember God said No many times to the sons of Jessie and finally God said, yes

• One day God will say yes. There will be basketball, yes to football, golf, soccer. Stock market will level out get back to bull, employment will come back yes, yes there will be plenty of toilet paper.

• Have you said yes to Jesus? Will you say yes right now let us pray?
