Sermon Title: In Remembrance of Me! What are we remembering?

Sermon Text:: Col 1:13-22; 1Cor 11:23b-26

Introduction:

Far too often as believers we partake in the wonderful and solemn ordinance that was given to us by Christ, but we do not really appreciate what we are doing… or realize just what it really represents…

I want to read the passage from 1 Cor 11 where Paul speaks of the Lord’s Supper…

23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me." 25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. 1 Cor 11:23-26 (NASB)

Did you hear it… did you hear what Jesus said… He instructed us to “Do this in remembrance of ME!” We are to do this and remember Jesus. But there are many of us who say, “I remember Jesus, why is this so important?”

It is because we need to remember MORE than the historical Jesus, but we need to remember WHAT Christ has done… and the 1st thing we need to remember is…

1. The Mission of Christ…(v.13-14, 20)

13 For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. 20 and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven .

When Jesus came to this world, He had a specific mission and we can find it all throughout Scripture and Jesus in Luke 19:10 revealed that mission to us when He said, “…10 "For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost." (NASB)

Jesus came to redeem a world that had turned its back on God. He came to do what humanity could not ever do… redeem itself! Jesus came to see the lost find their way in Him!

As our Scripture tells us this evening…

• Jesus has rescued us from the domain of darkness…

• Jesus has transferred us into His kingdom…

• Jesus has brought the redemption of sin… the forgiveness of sin to the lost…

• Jesus has brought to all who accept Him peace with God…

So when we partake of the Lord’s Supper we must always remember the Mission of Christ, but there is another thing we need to remember and that is that we must remember…

2. The Majesty of Christ…(v.15-19)

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. 18 He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. 19 For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him,

How can we possibly remember the Mission of Christ without realizing and remembering the Majesty of Jesus Christ! It was ONLY Christ who could do what needed to be done… It is only Christ who can save the soul…

The early Apostles knew this and preached it forcefully. Far too much in today’s world even so-called Christians do NOT acknowledge the Majesty of Jesus Christ and what He has done!

We have so many preachers preaching ‘feel good’ sermons and ‘health and wealth’ gospel, that they have abandoned the majesty of the Son of God!

Peter said in Acts 4:12 that there is NO other name by which man can be saved than the name of Jesus! My friends Jesus and Jesus alone can save you… Jesus and Jesus alone can redeem your soul… Jesus and Jesus alone can forgive you of the sin in your heart and change you from the inside out…

We can NEVER forget the MAJESTY of Jesus Christ when we partake of the Lord’s Supper. But finally tonight I want us to look at one more item and it is…
