  • Comment to those looking at my sermons: Please remind me if I ever leave out the Cross and Resurrection!
  • Family: Married for over 36 years... Two great sons; two wonderful daughters-in-law; three incredible grandchildren!
  • What my parents think of my sermons: I’ll ask them when I get to heaven! :-)
  • What my spouse (really) thinks of my sermons: I think that she is ok with most of them. The poor woman listens to me preach three times each Sunday... don’t know if I’d wish that on anybody!
  • Best advice given to me about preaching: "Always tell them about the Cross and Resurrection!" by a brother, friend and mentor in ministry: Rev. Dr. Eugene Gruell.
  • Books that have had an impact: "The Holy Bible" - one Author, various writers. "Blue Like Jazz" by Donald Miller; "UnChristian" by David Kinnaman "The Present Future" by Reggie McNeal "Leading Change" by John Kotter "The Shack" by William P. Young
  • Hobbies: Reading; Computers; Working in the yard.
  • If I could Preach one more time, I would say...: "Jesus loves you! Need convincing? - think about what He was willing to go through for you."
  • Something funny that happened while preaching: While serving Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church, one of our elderly parishoners passed out near the end of the worship service. We called the EMS. As they worked on her, she regained consciousness. As the medics tried to convince her to let them transport her to the hospital, my now fully awake parishoner said, "Oh no, I’m OK. I just fell asleep while the pastor was preaching."
  • What I want on my tombstone: Faithful servant; loving husband; proud father and grandfather.

Lent 4: We are all snake bit. Need proof? See what happens in the darkness... Listen to the griping and complaining... Listen to the poisonous words that come from us. But God has provided a solution to save the snake bit... His name is Jesus.

As a boy, I learned to hunt small game. Dad would take me out to a friend’s ranch. We’d follow cow paths through the brush and cactus looking for rabbit or hare. I remember one time we were out there walking along a cow path. All of a sudden we heard a loud dry rattle. You guessed ...read more

Lent 3: A narrative sermon from the perspective of a seller of doves and pigeons. It is based on the account of Jesus first cleansing of the temple.

[Note: This is a narrative sermon told from the perspective of, Yoseph, a seller of doves and pigeons at the Temple on the day that Jesus came and threw out the sellers and money changers. I put on a ‘costume’ as I changed into the character of Yoseph. The message begins with a brief ...read more

Transfiguration Sunday: Who is Jesus? Maybe better asked, "Who is Jesus to you?" We fail to truly recognize Jesus when we don’t understand his full divinity and his willingness to suffer and die on the cross for our sake.

Who is Jesus? - All-around great guy? Great teacher? Prophet? Savior? God? If you wanted to take the easy way out – your answer would simply be, “Yes.” But I’m not going to let you get away with that. Truly knowing Jesus touches more than understanding. It touches more than knowing ...read more

Ordinary Proper 23: A sermon looking at three erroneous ways we often attempt to inherit eternal life: religion; good works; riches. Set in the context of a fair that has many things from which we can pick and choose.

If you all didn’t make it to the Pan American Fair, you missed a good time! You could buy yourself a bunch of tickets and take them from place to place and play a game or buy a drink or get yourself some good food. Let me tell you a bit of what I tried yesterday: I started off by eating a couple ...read more

Ordinary Proper 22: Our individualistic orientation as a culture has brought many ills upon us. Among those is the deterioration of the family. This message looks at Jesus’ teaching on the intention of God for men and women and children.

Leonard Sweet, professor of theology at Drew University was the keynote speaker at a theological convocation that I attended last fall. Part of Dr. Sweet’s message focused on the rampant individualism that has become so much a part of our culture. Here is a paraphrase of part of what he said: ...read more
