Jesus loved to ask questions (the Gospels list at least 135 of his questions). The most powerful question Jesus asked in this text was "Who are you looking for?" Who they were looking for tells us a lot about the people in this story.

Jesus has completely surrendered Himself to these guards; He signifies that He is their substitute. We must take a moment to grasp this: He places Himself in front of them (and us) to protect them from the danger.

Jesus deliberately enables Himself to be arrested, showing that He is totally in control of the situation. In doing so Jesus demonstrates that no one who is in God’s family will be lost.

Jesus boldly stands trial before the high priest Annas

Jesus faced his cup of suffering willingly. God had a plan and Jesus, as difficult as it was, was willing to carry it out. Jesus needed to teach this lesson to Peter and it's a good lesson for us as well. Are we willing to 'drink our cup'?
