Summary: Sermon about concentrating on others and setting aside self.

Who Will Cry At My Funeral?

Ephesians 5: 15 – 20

Intro: I’m not fond of country music; but, I love some of the song titles that deal with living. I read some in a sermon by David Hill on SermonCentral titled, “How to Live Until I Die.” Here are a few:

His Teeth Was Stained; But His Heart Was Pure

I Just want to Live Until I die

I Still Miss You, Baby; But My Aim’s Getting’ Better

Mama Get A Hammer, There’s A Fly On Papa’s Head

You’re The Reason Our Kids Are So Ugly

My favorite:

How Can I Miss You If You Won’t Go Away?

I VS. 15 – 16 “Be very careful, then, how you live --- not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.”

A Some folks save it, others make, most waste it, several kill it and a few actually are on it. Many try to manage it and end up losing it --- TIME.

B TODAY IS THE YESTERDAY YOU WILL REMENISCE ABOUT TOMORROW.

C The writer of Ephesians encourages us to make the most of today because it is all we have.

II We must think about how we live our life. VSS. 18 – 20.

A Michael Hernandez has written a piece called “Property Laws as Viewed by a Toddler.” If I like it; it’s mine. If it’s in my hands, it’s mine. If I can take it from you, it’s mine. If I’m building something, all the pieces are mine. If it looks like it’s mine, it’s mine. If I saw it first, it’s mine. If I can see it, it’s mine. If I want it, it’s mine. If I think I can play with it better than you, it’s mine. If I play with it long enough, it’s mine. If you are playing with something else and you put it down, it’s mine.

B Church isn’t about US or ME. Church is taking the message of Christ Jesus into our community living to the glory of God.

C It’s time to stop thinking about ME and US and start thinking about OTHERS. If we don’t seek the will of the Lord, we are foolishly existing until we and the church die.

Concl: Kathy and Larry Miller wrote about Patrick Morely in a book titled, “God’s Vitamin C” For The Spirit (Starburst Ppublishers, 1996, pg. 23) Morely was a successful businessman who changed the direction of his life by asking himself, “Who’s going to cry at my funeral?” --- Ask yourself that question. Who will cry because they will miss what you do for them?
