Over the past few weeks we have looked at pictures of Jesus in the Pentateuch, the Historical books, and the Writings. Today we look at how Jesus is presented in the Prophetical books.

Intro.: Take out a pen or pencil. 1.Not long ago, a professor of psychology in one of our great universities gave a word suggestion test to his class of 40 students. He instructed them to write the word “Christmas,” and all the class did so. “Now,” said the professor, “right after the word ...read more

Though the Writings span a great deal of time, they do point us to Christ.

Job 19:25-27 Psalm 22:1-8; 16b-18 Intro.: Over the years I have dabbled in poetry. 1. In the fall of 1997 I was driving back from church. As I drove along, a leaf crossed my path. It looked as if it were a small animal creeping along the ground. A couple of days later I wrote the ...read more

The Historical books have traditionally been included in the prophetical books because they tell the story of the lessor prophets (i.e. the non-writing prophets). They too point us toward Christ.

Intro.: There will come times when the place of God in our lives is not as obvious. 1.Oh, I would like to think that I will exhibit perfect faith. 2.I would really like to think that I am the epitome of a faithful believer – which of course I am. 3.NOT! 4.You see, like every believer, there ...read more

The Old Testament points toward the New. The Old Testament points toward Jesus. This week we look at the Pentateuch.

Intro.: I remember when I was a Boy Scout many years ago. 1.One of the skills that we had to learn was to follow tracking details left by our scout leader. 2.The three of us on our team got lost. 3.Actually we got set up – because the team that went before us had taken the clues and changed ...read more

  • Not Like Any Store I Know

    Contributed on Nov 29, 2006

For the last three weeks we have compared the church to a store - a store getting ready for Christmas. But the church is not a store - it is a unique institution designed by God to share His grace with a broken world.

Intro.: I need to apologize to you - I lied to you. 1.I told you that we would spend time looking how we might restock the store. 2.But it dawned on me during the week that if I did that, I was leaving he wrong impression. 3.It might sound as if the church were just another store – with a ...read more
